Hi all,

Thanks for taking the time to read this short article. I find myself repeating the same things to my students, so I`ve decided to write my advice here for all to view. I hope you find it useful.

There are two very different motivations to hire a Maths tutor. One is to understand all the fundamental concepts of Maths and build a structurally sound understanding. Why? because the subject is beautiful and very, very interesting!

The other motivation, and probably the most common is simply to pass the exam with the best possible grades as this will help get the right university place or job.

My advice is, understand your motivation. If you want to just pass with great grades, you don`t need to be good at maths! This sounds ridiculous but its true.

A Level maths is actually very formulaic. There are methods and algorithms which can be applied almost blindly to all topics. Once you are comfortable with the process, you will see how your actual understanding improves.

Secondly, exam technique is almost as important as knowledge itself. You will be amazed how easy it is to pick up marks on questions you don`t even know how to answer!

My third point wont make me popular amongst the teaching community. I believe Maths is generally badly taught. Some concepts are taught in complex ways just for the sake of it. It doesn`t have to be that way.

Finally, and I can`t stress this enough. Ask "stupid" questions. Ask them all. A "stupid" question will clear up any fundamental misunderstanding and will help your tutor identify you weakness.

I`ve spent 10 years getting the best out of my students. If you think my approach interests you, do get in touch.

Good luck with your studies.
