There is no magic formula to doing well as a student. There is a simple formula, which I shall explain below. There is only one trait you need. It is that of discipline, every one of these steps is an action that needs discipline. I can't stress this enough. After that there is the ability to focus intensely for extensive periods of time and the skill of actually doing assignments. Identify where you are lacking in order to improve.

1. Manage your time in order to evenly distribute the workload throughout the year.

2. Build up your capacity for focus. Time how long you can study for with zero distractions. You may find this is only 10 minutes at first if you are out of practice. But over time you will build this up to multiple hours.

3. Do the opposite of most students to get exceptional results when it comes to the act of studying. That means studying in a remote café when others are working in a busy university library.

4. Get your tutor to help you write. Arrange extensive discussions with them in office hours to devise the assignment's structure.

5. Since you have followed steps one and two you are now in a position to review your work before you submit it. Your structure will have changed so now you can bring your new structure in bullet points to your tutor.

6. Polish the next draft for grammar, punctuation, spelling and references; you should not have cared about this until now.
