Because of all the substantial differences between natural and rational numbers, to truly overcome fractions misconceptions, my approach is as follows:
Resist the temptation to rush through material
Bear in mind the cognitive load inherent in what I am teaching (only try and overcome one potential misconception at a time)
Take small steps even when it seems easy
Make sure all my pupils really master these simple steps before moving on
