Because of all the substantial differences between natural and rational numbers, to truly overcome fractions misconceptions, my approach is as follows:
• Resist the temptation to rush through material
• Bear in mind the cognitive load inherent in what I am teaching (only try and overcome one potential misconception at a time)
• Take small steps – even when it seems easy
• Make sure all my pupils really master these simple steps before moving on
