Information about Sophie

For the last three years I have been a Science Teacher at a large secondary school in Southampton. In this time I have taught Biology, Physics and Chemistry up to Top Set Triple Science level and have also taught KS3. I have led the GCSE Psychology department and worked in a pastoral role as head of year 11, leading the final year of the school, their results and behaviour. My teacher training was completed at the University of Exeter through the Teach First programme and achieved an “Outstanding” grade as well as distinction on all my research projects. Before going into teaching I studied for my undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford where I obtained a First Class degree in Biological Sciences whilst also enjoyed a varied extra-curricular timetable. I am now moving back to London, where I was born and grew up, to complete a Masters Degree in Medicine, Health and Public Policy at King’s College University.

I have tutored a range of age groups for the last 10 years including adult learners, A-level students and for common entrance. I have also offered personal statement support and mock interviews for university, particularly for Oxbridge applicants. Before teaching I also worked for the charity IntoUniversity supporting students from low income backgrounds with their school work and university applications.

During my Undergraduate degree I was involved in number of charity organisations including volunteering at the helpline Nightline. In addition to this, I coxed my college rowing team and was Captain of Coxes at my college. I currently volunteer for the charity “The Listening Place” offering face to face support for the suicidal.

In my own time I run and swim frequently and travel as much as possible as well as reading widely and extensively.

I am an avid football fan (having been a Southampton season ticket holder for the last 15 years) and attend matches as often as possible.

I can cook well and have attended a cooking course in Limouge in France.

I am emergency response and First-Aid qualified through my diving qualifications (I am a certified rescue diver with over 160 dives completed).

I am foster sister to an 18 year old with severe behavioural difficulties for whom I am one of the 3 primary carers.

Availability: I am available a range of hours on weekdays including evening and also on Sunday afternoons.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have been a science and psychology teacher for 3 years in a large state school in Southampton as well as being head of year there.

I have tutoring experience with a range of ages. Most of this has focused on Maths, English and the sciences but I have also covered many others. I have tutored children as young as those in Year Two and have worked with all school ages through to A2 level and university applications. In addition to this I have worked with young adults and adult learners (including the teaching of English as a foreign language.)

In addition, I have spent a number of years babysitting children from 6 months to 14 years old as well as regularly looking after my 15 year old foster sister who has a number of behavioural difficulties.

My job as a tennis coach, both for one-on-one classes and larger groups, also involves work with young children and constant engagement.

Past experience shows I can interact well with children of all ages and aid them in their understanding as well as building their confidence.

In addition to regular babysitting or tutoring I am able to offer help with Personal Statement advice, having had successful applications with all 5 of my Universities including the University of Oxford, something aided by the broad range of knowledge I have achieved as a result of my mix of subjects at A-level. I have given a number of mock interviews in the past and helped students to work on their personal statements. Alongside this I can offer help with GCSE, A-level and University choices having done extensive research in this area. At univeristy I worked as a Student Ambassador which involved guiding students, helping out at interviews and open days and talking to prospective students with the aim of widening access.

The rigorous selection process for Teach First means that I have been shown to be someone who can teach well and engage students. I have worked as a Teaching Assistant at a school in Oxford for several days as part of my work experience before my time teaching.

Sophie tutored both my sons one for the 8+ and the other for 11+. She was punctual, reliable, enthusiastic and committed. She was always very well prepared and flexible in working with me to ensure that everything was covered as directed by the school. My boys really enjoyed seeing her and both secured places at the school of our first choice.
