I believe it`s important to engage a student`s interest in the texts being studied. Once a student is engaged, they will be motivated to discover more for themselves which is vital because a tutor is often only seeing a student for an hour each week. My role as a tutor is to facilitate that initial engagement, as well as simultaneously helping the student to improve the quality of their work by discussing texts together and utilising a combination of relevant resources, written exercises and practice papers.
I would tell any parent or guardian that the most effective way to improve a student`s English is very simple - get them to read more! This is best achieved by finding something that they enjoy reading - whether that`s a Dickens novel, a broadsheet newspaper or a magazine on a subject they are interested in. This fulfils many functions - it expands a student`s vocabulary, helps them improve their writing and hopefully engenders a habit (even a passion!) for reading.
It is also extremely important for students at any level to improve the way they plan and structure their written work. A high-quality essay will have a clearly delineated structure and use well-chosen quotations and strong contextual information to supplement its argument.
I have a comprehensive knowledge of English literature and can provide a student with a strong understanding of the content and context of any text, tailored to meet the syllabus requirements and Assessment Objectives

The role Sean played in supporting our son in his English Literature and English Language GCSE courses was truly transformative. Perhaps because our son`s dyslexic and doesn`t enjoy much reading for pleasure, perhaps because he`s going to a very competitive school and realised he wasn`t keeping up with his classmates, he`d lost all confidence for English. For him it was the hardest subject and he simply didn`t believe he could do well. He claimed to be trying nonetheless but to no avail. In Year 10 I realised his English teacher didn`t really believe he could grade higher than a 5 and back then his assessments were still at 3-4 grade level. If his teacher didn`t believe he could do better, she wouldn`t be able to guide and support him in doing better. We needed a tutor and we were so glad to find Sean. Sean was patient, reliable, flexible and enthusiastic about his subject. From the very first lesson, my son told us that he found the tutoring session helpful. Sean was encouraging and helped my son to re-build his confidence. He worked on making my son more aware of exam technique and helped him develop more clarity in simply understanding what the exam questions were looking for in an answer. Our son was able to enter the exam hall with a much higher level of confidence, thanks to Sean`s tutoring. He passed his GCSE English Language and Literature with a 6 and 7, well above what his teacher had expected when he was in Year 10. We learned that he was only one mark off a 7 in English Language too. I expect that whatever your child`s level of performance, Sean can support them in doing even better.

Sean was a great tutor. He helped my son get 2 9s in English lang and lit form two 5s. Definitely recommend
