Information about Steven

Not everyone can reach their potential in a class of perhaps thirty students, especially if peer pressure, noise and poor behaviour work against their best efforts. I began teaching as a vocation, after many successful years as a marketing manager in the pharmaceutical industry. I feel that it is this background that gives my teaching an unusual edge. It has given me an approach to teaching that has changed the outlook and results of many students from primary level through to university, inspiring them with renewed confidence and enthusiasm. The large number of four and five star references on sites like this one are are evidence of this.

As well as teach and tutor, I have also written for several publishers including the BBC (where I was the BBC Bitesize English teacher for some years, appearing on the BBC "Power Hour" revision sessions on radio, Twitter and Facebook).

I have taught English Language and Literature (as well as Media and Film Studies) to KS3, GCSE, A-level and under-graduate level for several years I also tutor primary (KS2) students, helping them with their KS2 and entrance exam preparation. My speciality, apart from a natural love of English Literature. is linguistics and I suppose, through my teaching materials, I have become quite well known even nationally for my work in this area.

I taught for many years at the county`s leading comprehensive school, The Beauchamp College in Oadby, where year-on-year my classes achieved amongst the highest results in the school, and therefore amongst the highest in the county of Leicestershire.

As a naturally shy individual despite a confident-seeming exterior, I am especially keen on building confidence in my students, and I try hard to improve public speaking skills as these are so important not just for interviews and the like, but for a general feeling of well-being and inner-confidence. Schools seem unable to help quiet or shy students and this is an area in which I think I can say I excel.

I am nationally known and respected for my teaching materials and run my own popular English GCSE and A-level revision website. My teaching materials and guides are used throughout the country and even overseas. As the BBC`s Bitesize English teacher, I have been on the Greg James`s Radio 1 show, answering students revision "Tweets" and even chatting on air with him about his schooldays and his all-time favourite book, To Kill a Mockingbird!

Availability: Thanks to the recommendations from many students on this and other tuition sites, I have become very popular - but still usually manage to find a place for new students.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have been teaching English and Media Studies up to A-level standard and beyond for many years, regularly obtaining exam results among the highest in the county.

Steve was an absolutely great tutor for English Literature GSCE for my daughter, he motivated her to think deeper about the subject and gave her useful homework to keep her focused and motivated which led her to be more confident in her school work. He was always lovely to deal with and I would definitely recommend him. Thank you Steve. 😊;

I would definitely recommend Steve, he has really helped my son in the run up to his GCSE exams/assessments. My son really enjoys how Steve teaches and found a new interest in his English and now looks forward to the lessons. Steve also always tries to tailor the lessons to work alongside what my son has been learning within school that week. Very glad we found Steve and he was able to fit us in.

My daughter was coming towards the end of year 10 when we first made contact with Steve. From the initial communications through the site right to the last session he put us at ease and I felt confident we had picked the right tutor. Steve made an effort to understand the areas we were concerned about and each week I could see the confidence growing in my daughter and her worries about the approaching GCSEs lessened. She went from a GCSE grade 5/6 at the end of Year 10 to achieving a 9 in English Language and an 8 in English Literature. I would definitely recommend Steve for anyone looking for a tutor. His knowledge and experience together with his ability to get the best out of the students is first class.
