Information about Richard
I am a 23 year old British born and educated tutor. I am a hard working, conscientious and innovative tutor who relates well to children of all ages and is very versatile in my approach. I tailor my tutoring style to each individual and for specific exams, I place great focus on exam technique, essay writing and assessment objectives. I achieved academic success myself from GCSEs onwards by employing a methodical approach to learning, ensuring that I was aware of the expectations and demands of an exam and ensuring I followed that criteria. I subsequently enjoying teaching exam preparation, study skills and offering revision tips.
Availability: Available weekdays (daytime and evening) as well as weekends.
Willing to travel: 30 miles
Experience: My specialist subject to tutor is History having taken the subject to degree level at Cambridge University. However, I am also currently writing a novel which allows me to teach English and general writing skills. Other subjects in which I can offer tuition are the three Sciences, Maths, Geography, Economics and Politics (up to GCSE). Most importantly, I greatly enjoy helping others learn and overcome their challenges. I find this extremely fulfilling. In terms of method I believe the ideal approach is to inspire your charge and bring out genuine enthusiasm – there is no greater learning tool than unforced interest. For the purposes of passing exams I will also strive to highlight exactly what the examiner demands and channel the tutee’s energy in this direction. Some tutees will be most energised specifically by breaking down the exam paper and maximising their marks in this way; I am aware of this and am prepared to rise to it. Outside of the national curriculum, I have tutored debating teams in how to structure their arguments and building their confidence to speak. I have taken part in mentoring schemes whereby I would help a younger school member with his homework, and generally be available for support and guidance. Over the last 5 years I have offered my advice to tutees regarding their applications to Oxbridge. In particular I have helped draft personal statements, which I have always believed should be strictly subject-focused. Furthermore, at college in my final two years I helped establish a small peer-support network amongst some of my year group that was designed to help motivate each other and encourage success.
