Information about Julia

Testimonial from an agency who feature me on their website as their example English Tutor:

Julia is a multi-disciplinary tutor with several years of one to one tuition experience both in the UK and overseas. From IB to GCSE, Common Entrance to Cambridge Pre-U, Julia has worked with students on a range of curriculums to refine their English Language and Literature skills and expand their knowledge. International tutoring assignments have included Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Barbados, Spain and Switzerland as families have requested that Julia accompany them on their travels over holiday periods. Bilingual in English and French, Julia also speaks basic Italian and thrives in new cultural environments.

Having attended Cheltenham Ladies’ College through to her A Levels (English A, French A, Latin A). Julia received a Distinction in her Cambridge STEP Paper in English as well as the Sixth Form Latin Prize. She went on to earn a place at Oxford University where she read BA Joint Honours in English Literature and French. She received Congratulatory First Class Honours and graduated in 2006 with a University Prize (Carl Albert Memorial Prize) for her performance in her Finals. Julia went on to complete a Masters in English Literature with Distinction in 2009. She was the recipient of the Charles Oldham Shakespeare Prize for her Final Dissertation. Julia chose to remain in academia whilst offering one to one private tuition in London. She conducted weekly seminars on post-1900 English Literature for first year undergraduates and took part in Doctoral Research in English Literature. In September 2012, Julia was selected as a first year student at Bethel School of Ministry in Redding, California. She returned to London in May 2013 and has since been fully occupied with tutoring and writing both in the UK and overseas.

Julia’s breadth of one to one experience with a range of ages, levels and abilities is exemplary. She has tutored the core English, Maths and Science up to GCSE level amongst an array of other secondary subjects. In person, Julia comes across as a switched on, motivated and caring young lady with high integrity. Her passion for tutoring and education is obvious and sincere on meeting. She articulates herself with great ease and insight and has a level of intuition that allows her to quickly understand they way her students think and swiftly compose a personalised tuition schedule. Julia enjoys engaging in dialogue with her pupils to stimulate their interest in a wide range of subjects. She was selected for a recent residential tuition assignment in Italy with a view to enhancing the knowledge of two brothers across the Humanities. This involved stimulating debate over lunches and generally enhancing their intellectual curiosity.

The range of testimonials to follow offer an insight into the gratitude of some of Julia’s previous clients whose children she has supported on and off over the last four years. Julia remains notoriously loyal to her students, many of whom she has guided successfully through school entrances, university applications and scholarship exams. Outside of academia and teaching, Julia is keen on outdoor adventure, dancing, writing and acting. She spent two years as a freelance theatre director in London where she directed Shakespeare workshops and led sessions on a range of plays and collaborative new writing.

I would be delighted to provide references upon request. The following are a few of the testimonials given by parents of previous tutees:

``Julia has visited us twice in the capacity of tutor to my 18 year old daughter, Daisy, who is sitting her A Levels this summer. Daisy found her extremely helpful, enthusiastic and very encouraging. From our point of view, she was very flexible over timings and was prepared to take on all the challenges thrown at her - i.e. different texts in English that may have been less familiar together with a student who at times struggled to concentrate and absorb information! She was generally good to have around and certainly has given Daisy some confidence which she desperately needed.``

``Julia has been brilliant so far lovely personality and approach to teaching, extremely prompt and well-prepared for the lessons. We are very pleased.``

``I wanted to say that your advice and coaching brought fantastic results – Anna’s personal statement proved to be successful and was favoured by the law departments in all five universities – Cambridge, UCL, LSE, Nottingham and Manchester!``

“We just received the letter from St Mary’s and our daughter has been offered a place! Julia - thanks a lot for all your help!”

“Julia is lovely and a very good communicator.”

“We are delighted! Julia is a great choice of tutor for us.”

“Julia worked for us over the Sumer of 2012. She helped our older boy, aged 11, with his English and Maths and then some more general ‘life’ work. Julia impressed enormously. She is dutiful, conscientious, hard-working, well prepared and has an ability to understand a young mind and find ways to engage it to great effect. Our son was inspired and enthused by his interaction with Julia, even when the subject matter was pretty dry. She’s also great fun and her smart and enquiring mind rubbed off on our little man. Her knowledge of, and passion for, English Literature and English Language was especially impressive. We would have no hesitation employing her again.”

“Thank you very much. Julia was great with Poppy. To be honest an even better match than the previous tutor as Poppy really really liked Julia`s approach. If Julia is ever coming back to Hong Kong please let me know.”

“We had a really happy and successful week with Julia. She quickly adapted to the heat, beach style living and makeshift tutoring table and ground cushions at our holiday beach house. Julia came well prepared especially as we have no internet for help or back up. She was very flexible with timing and always punctual herself. T and P loved being tutored by Julia and having the one on one time, with someone with different ideas and teaching styles and she especially helped them both by stretching their minds by giving them different tasks to do each day on the three subjects. I think she has really helped T gain some of her confidence back in Maths and managed to cover many topics that T found difficult. I know T was feeling more comfortable at the end of the week as a result. P loved her sessions too and covered the issues she was unsure about in Science, had fun sessions in English and also covered any difficulties she had in Maths. Julia it seems has a very calm and patient approach to teaching which is ideal for our girls who can be sensitive to teachers who are impatient. Generally we are happy with Julia and hopefully we will see the results in T’s scholarship in a few weeks time.”
