Information about John
Currently taking on students for 2020/2021! I work full-time as a professional tutor providing English and Mathematics at KS3, GCSE, and A level in Sussex and London. I offer day-time home-school support, afternoon and evening sessions, specialised Common Entrance support (at level 2, and 3, and scholarship), SEN support, short-term intensive support, and residential placements!
Thank you for taking the time to view my tutoring profile. Below are details about my background, approach, services, and fees. Please note: due to high demand, I do have a waiting list, but please do get in touch as gaps do occur in my schedule.
I am a friendly, patient, and passionate individual. I am aware that individuals learn at their own pace and am able to provide intervention, extension, or additional support depending on the individual needs of students. Not only I am familiar with taking students in difficult circumstances through the curriculum successfully, I also pride myself in pushing and extending students beyond their potential with motivating and inspiring sessions. Whether you`re aiming for the top grades, or hoping to achieve a pass, I have the experience, resources, and organisational and motivational skills to get you there!
Learning is a lifelong pursuit and this perspective underpins my approach to all of my sessions: I require my students to recognise that no task is ever finished; that the goals they set themselves should always be reassessed and extended; that no matter how well they do, I will only commend the effort they put in, not the outcome; that they should endeavour to nurture and develop their curiosity and passionately pursue the knowledge and skills they require for future success. In my personal experience, tuition is so much more than simply teaching subject material, it is about teaching individuals how to engage with learning so that they become more confident and capable learners.
I have 7 years of experience teaching GCSE English Language, English Literature and Mathematics. I ensure students learn a systematic approach for breaking down complex problems in order to identify when to apply appropriate skills. I ensure students engage with a wide range of topics, focussing on developing their skillset in order to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in attaining higher than their predicted grades. All sessions are followed up with homework specifically aimed at focussing their foundational skills, honing their understanding of new concepts, and consolidating the information we have most recently covered. I would typically expect 45-90 minutes of homework completed for most students, and up to 3 hours per week for those pursuing aspirational goals.
I offer round-the-clock support via email for students, and actively encourage them to contact me whenever they find themselves in need of additional support!
I have 4 years of experience teaching A Level English Language, English Literature, and Mathematics. I ensure students understand the level of commitment needed to succeed at this level, ensure that from Day One they are ready to establish positive habits, rituals, and routines in order to build a successful approach to this demanding level of study! At this level, students should have a passion for the subjects they are studying and I balance my approach between providing bespoke resources for the areas that need the most support, and responding to their most urgent and important needs. It is common for students to lead sessions at this level, using their tutor as an encyclopaedia of knowledge, skills, advice, and explanations.
I have 6 years of experience 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance tuition in English and Maths. I ensure students learn a systematic approach for breaking down complex problems in order to identify when to apply appropriate skills. I ensure students understand precisely which skills they must work on in relation to the school-specific entrance exams (typically, but not always, ISEB).
I actually started my teaching career in an SEN Inclusion Unit in an East London school. I completely understand that the labels assigned to people barely scratch the surface of their personality and needs. I understand that the needs of individuals vary widely and the support I offer is given specific to the needs of the students in a bespoke manner.
I would advise you contact me, and we speak at length on the phone in order to assess suitability.
Making the decision to home-school your children takes guts! It can be difficult to know how best to educate your children in subjects you have no specialist knowledge in! In my sessions I ensure students know exactly what they are learning, and how it relates to previous, and future content. They will learn a systematic approach for breaking down complex problems in order to identify when to apply appropriate skills, and will typically be expected to write an essay each and every week, where appropriate. I ensure students engage with a wide range of topics, focussing on developing their skillset in order to ensure they feel comfortable and confident.
When I home-school students, there is always an expectation that parents will be highly involved throughout the week with the projects I put in place. I communicate in clear and simple terms what is required every step of the way, to bring peace of mind, and a clear vision of how to reach longer-term goals. Whether home-schooling long term, or waiting to re-entry into the mainstream, I can ensure that a comprehensive education is provided.
Sometimes a school holiday offers the perfect opportunity to catch up, get ahead, or cram for an upcoming exam! It can be difficult to know where to start sometimes, but with my support, I can build bespoke, short-term intensive plans to enable the best possible outcomes!
Availability: Monday-Friday: 9am-8pm; Saturday: 9am-4pm.
I charge £40 for the first hour of tuition, inclusive of planning time, resource preparation, VAT, travel time and travel expenses. After this initial hour, each following hour will be charged at £35 (30 minutes = £17.50).
Example 1: Should you require tuition for English Language, Literature, and Mathematics for 3 hours, I would charge £40 for the initial hour, then £35 thereafter, for a total of £100.
Example 2: Should you require tuition in a single subject for 90 minutes, I would charge £40 for the initial hour, then £17.50 for the following 30 minutes, for a total of £57.50.
Example 3: Should you require tuition in a single subject for an hour per week, I would charge £40 for each hour repeatedly.
Please note: if you have requirements that exceed 3 hours in a single visit, then separate rates must be negotiated in order to lower your expenditure. I am open, honest, and transparent about money and do want to ensure my services provide high value for money!
All fees are payable at the end of each calendar month, upon receipt of your monthly invoice, via BACS. It is not advised to pay tutors cash, as they may be circumventing their obligation to pay their taxes.
Willing to travel: 30 miles
Experience: My Background
I am a qualified teacher with a First Class Honours Degree in Linguistics, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, and a Masters in Transformational Leadership within an Educational Setting.
I have been working as a professional tutor for the last 6 years: working for The East Sussex County Councils Virtual School for Looked After Children, enabling young people from extremely difficult backgrounds to achieve success and get their lives on track; Tavistock Tutors, enabling elite clients children to meet the prestigious requirements of entry to some of the most prestigious schools in this country, working in North-East London, but also across the world; and as a local, independent tutor in East Sussex, enabling students to achieve success in their GCSEs, A Levels, and Common Entrance exams for Brighton College, and Lancing College.
I have had the privilege of educating British and European royalty, the children of foreign ministers, and have been enabled to travel the world as an elite tutor, enabling students to succeed in gaining entrance to some Britains most prestigious schools.
I have had the honour of working with vulnerable young people in the care system enabling them to access education outside of the mainstream school system, enabling them to make progress with regard to their academic, social, and emotional needs.
I have been lucky enough to work with children with diagnoses of ASD, ADHD, Aspergers Syndrome, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia, unpicking their individual needs, slowly, to enable them to learn suitable skills at a suitable pace, in a safe and comfortable learning environment, building confidence and enjoyment in their learning.
My bread and butter is ensuring able students absolutely ace their GCSE exams. This seems to be where most demand is within tuition, and this is how I pay my bills.
I have taught, multiple times, the OCR, AQA and IGCSE curriculums, and students have always experienced success.
Feedback For John (16)
He`s an excellent teacher.
John started tutoring our son a few weeks ago. Even at this early stage, it`s clear that his combination of rigor, warmth and enthusiasm has successfully engaged our initially somewhat reluctant son. He is an excellent communicator, and we look forward to John and our son continuing to work together.
John has been brilliant working with our son. Every session is engaging and fun, with just the right level of challenge. He is very reliable, always on time, and always following up promptly with study plan updates and homework. With his expertise we`re confident our son can achieve his study goals.
Polite, responsive and professional
John immediately won over my twin boys. They have found him very helpful and clear in his explanations. He`s dedicated and always engages with them well. Highly recommended.
I cannot speak highly enough of this tutor.
My son has always struggled with English, mainly because he finds the tasks too abstract. He has Aspergers Syndrome and much prefers subjects with black and white answers!
After getting a grade 1 in his mock (G) and only being able to write 1 or 2 sentences for each question, we looked for a tutor to help. The first tutor walked away after only one lesson.
Then we found John. John tailored his lessons to help him understand the logic behind what was required and built his confidence in writing.
It was a pleasure to see our son go in to his final exams this June with determination and knowing exactly what was expected from him. We are quietly hopeful that he will get his 4.
John is friendly, flexible, reliable and a great teacher.
I only wish we`d found him sooner!
John has been tutoring my 15 year old daughter with maths. He has been brilliant with her, increasing her confidence and making maths lessons enjoyable which for a child who hates maths I thought would be impossible. He explains things in a way she can understand and makes sure she understands. He also sets her some homework which helps consolidate her learning. I have been very impressed with the standard of his tutoring. He is also reliable with good time keeping. I would not hesitate to recommend John`s services.
After only 2 sessions I have seen John create a level of engagement with my son that I didn`t think possible. It is early days but John has quickly worked out what is needed and the best way to get positive results. I am feeling very encouraged so far.
John has been working with my son ahead of his English GCSE`s and has really brought the work to life for him. John`s enthusiasm and ability to fit into our slightly chaotic household helped all of us and the rapport he built with my son was great to see. I would highly recommend his services.
John was a fantastic tutor for my son, he put him at ease straight away and made the sessions interesting. My son now feels so much more confident going in for his exam . Thank you John
We have found John to be approachable and professional. He has built a good rapport with my 13 year old son who has been a fairly reluctant learner until now.
My son is now eager to show John the work he has done in school and for him and he is certainly keen to work with John.
John worked with my son throughout year nine. During this time his Maths & English skills improved considerably, but the biggest positive for us as parents was the change in his confidence level and we have already seen him benefit from this at the start of year 10. Would highly recommend John.
We have had 4 sessions so far. My son had become very disengaged from maths, but he finds his sessions with John very enjoyable, looks forward to them, and has clearly started to find the subject much more accessible and interesting. Really pleased.
John gave my daughter a number of English Language tutor sessions just ahead of her GCSE exam. He really helped boost her confidence which was a key part of her exam preparation. I would recommend John to other people needing Eng Lang support.
Very impressed after two lessons. John clearly enjoys his subject, and is both encouraging and informative.
Have only had a couple of sessions. But so far brilliant !
