Information about John

I am a qualified teacher with over a decade of experience, delivering high-quality English and Maths lessons to KS3, GCSE, and A-level students.

I believe in establishing and maintaining high standards that motivate and inspire my students to achieve their goals: I establish high levels of organisational and time-management competencies with my students, giving them the responsibility to engage with a wide range of relevant content, while effectively presenting key ideas and concepts that will push them forward.

Over the past decade, I have worked with a wide range of students and have experience teaching to the highest levels, while also enabling students with specific cognitive difficulties to empower themselves, and take themselves further than they might have thought possible. I have an MA in Transformational Leadership, and in applying the core principles of this degree, I believe I am able to provide each and every student I work with the inspiration, skills, and resources they need to meet and exceed their goals.

My aim has always been to establish a framework for the student so that they understand their current position in their `learning journey`. By creating this narrative, students I have worked with have always felt motivated by their overarching goal(s). The structure within that framework, then, has always been to provide them with exactly what they need each step of the way.

CASE STUDIES:
Eleven Plus Tuition: I have worked with students in East and West Sussex for the past 10 years, enabling them to pass entrance exams for Brighton College and Lancing College.

13+ and Eton College:
I have been particularly fortunate to have developed relationships with families who have given me the opportunity to teach towards Eton Entrance and Scholarship exams.

GCSE and A-Level:
I teach GCSE and A Level English and Maths on a daily basis. I have been lucky enough to develop relationships with local schools who contract me on a day-rate to work with their gifted and talented students, as well as their borderline (might pass exams, might not), and Pupil Premium students (students who come from families with financial difficulties).

I have been very successful in teaching GCSE and A Level Maths and English both in schools, at homes, and online.

Neurodiversity:
As part of my 1-2-1 tuition practice, I regularly work with students who require additional support, and benefit hugely from it: students with autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, for example, all might need additional time to process and understand. I am very grateful to be able to provide this to students, enabling them to meet their own potential in a manner that suits their specific needs.

Residential:
I have been privileged enough to travel the world as an ‘international tutor’ working in New York, Italy, Austria, and remote Scottish islands. These roles have been varied and interesting, allowing me to work with students in a short-term intensive way, while exploring the world. I have had regular clients who I visit multiple times a year, and understand the need for a balanced approach to the needs of my students, and the needs of the families I am with.

All in all, I want to communicate that I am a highly competent teacher with the flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of almost any student. On a personal level, I am personable, agreeable, and respectful. Kindness, patience and respect are at the core of my personality, and I truly enjoy helping other people expand their knowledge, and take pride in achieving their goals.

Availability: I currently work Monday-Friday: 9am-9pm. Please enquire about specific days and times.

Willing to travel: 30 miles

Experience: My Background
I am a qualified teacher with a First Class Honours Degree in Linguistics, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, and a Masters in Transformational Leadership within an Educational Setting, and a Graduate Diploma in Law.

I have worked as a professional tutor for the last decade: working for The East Sussex County Council’s Virtual School for Looked After Children, enabling young people from extremely difficult backgrounds to achieve success and get their lives on track; Tavistock Tutors, enabling “elite” clients’ children to meet the prestigious requirements of entry to some of the most prestigious schools in this country, working in North-East London, but also across the world; and as a local, independent tutor in East Sussex, enabling students to achieve success in their GCSEs, A Levels, and Common Entrance exams for Brighton College, and Lancing College.
I have had the privilege of educating British and European royalty, the children of foreign ministers, and have been enabled to travel the world as an “elite tutor”, enabling students to succeed in gaining entrance to some Britain’s most prestigious schools.
I have had the honour of working with vulnerable young people in the care system enabling them to access education outside of the mainstream school system, enabling them to make progress with regard to their academic, social, and emotional needs.
I have been lucky enough to work with children with diagnoses of ASD, ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia, unpicking their individual needs, slowly, to enable them to learn suitable skills at a suitable pace, in a safe and comfortable learning environment, building confidence and enjoyment in their learning.

I have taught, multiple times, the OCR, AQA and IGCSE curriculums, and students have always experienced success.

John started tutoring our son a few weeks ago. Even at this early stage, it`s clear that his combination of rigor, warmth and enthusiasm has successfully engaged our initially somewhat reluctant son. He is an excellent communicator, and we look forward to John and our son continuing to work together.
