Information about Joseph

I am a highly experienced and enthusiastic maths and English teacher and keen to use these attributes to the full in my tutoring. My aim is to deliver a learning experience tailored to the individual. Fun and creativity are at the heart of the successful learning process as is the need to grasp a secure understanding of key concepts. I am very interested in the ways in which children learn and know a great deal about learning styles and preferences that different children learn best from. But I am just as interested in preparing children properly for any tests they are to take in order to give them the best possible chance of achieving success. That includes careful examination of previous S.A.T. tests and building in similar types of questions and presentation formats into the children`s learning programme.

Background:

Having an in-depth knowledge of the Primary Curriculum and 16 years teaching experience working with children in KS1 and 2 ranging from the gifted and talented to those requiring much greater levels of support, I am keen to pass on the requisite skills and knowledge needed for children to reach their true potential and gain the academic success that is so desired.

I have been a school maths coordinator for 12 years and have taught booster sessions in both English and Maths -to children needing additional support in order to close the gap between themselves and their peers and to those high achievers wishing to advance their skills and knowledge still further.

During my time as a teacher I have kept records of evidence outlining the amount of progress individuals or groups of individuals have made and have always received high praise not only for the lessons taught and the rapport I had with the children but also the subject knowledge in the subjects taught and the efficient and effective way I have run my department.

Having started a family of my own and choosing to look after our child in his formative years I am now keen to put all that experience gained as a teacher into tutoring on a one to one level now that my son has reached greater levels of independence.

Tutoring Process:

Initially my first step is to engage with the student in order for the students to feel motivated and uninhibited so that successful learning can take place. After evaluating the student’s level of knowledge, and the curriculum they are currently receiving, I put together sessions tailored to their needs. My planning is always meticulous and I analyse each session carefully attempting to unearth any stumbling blocks that the student may have encountered during the session and to charter the developmental steps ahead. During the sessions I provide detailed explanations followed by examples and exercises and wherever possible incorporate the use of technology. Having always had a great deal of patience I am willing to explain a subject as many times as is necessary in order for a student to gain a full understanding. Students will often receive short tasks to be done independently in order to gauge whether the tutorial has been fully understood. I try to build my student’s confidence by helping them understand the fundamental concepts. In all of the booster sessions completed there has been a marked improvement in ability and exam results of the children concerned.

Whether the student is a gifted young mathematician who needs to be constantly challenged or a struggling student trying to get to grips with the subject my approach is about delivering a learning experience that is tailored to the individual.

Availability: Evenings and weekends.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I have worked as a qualified teacher in the Wolverhampton and Walsall boroughs for 16 years in total and was part of Senior Management Teams at both the schools I taught at.

I have a vast amount of experience in preparing children for their S.A.T.s exams...marking S.A.T.`s and analysis with a view to improved future performance in aspects of the subject that have proved most difficult.

I have been Head of Department and school governor, delivered staff training and have been a qualified Mentor to students coming into the teaching profession. Further responsibilities have included running successful project teams that secured the Basic Skills Quality Mark for my school and began the process of attaining the Every Child Matters Certificate.

My son is really enjoying his sessions with Joseph. My son feels `understood` by Joseph and loves the fact he is allowed to call him Jo!
He is enjoying his work more and is more eager to learn. Excellent all round! Thank you!
