Information about Joshua
Through my calm and patient approach, students` confidence in their abilities increases and their understanding deepens. I have enjoyed helping students through difficulties with their subjects while endeavouring to find and solve the problems students have in their understanding to give them a firmer grasp of the topic. Both students and parents have offered positive feedback from the great improvement in their grade as a result of my tuition. For example, a student`s grade in A Level Physics improved from originally an E to an A after my tuition, while others attend their preferred schools after taking entrance exams.
Availability: I teach at both mine and students` homes. Based in North London, I am particularly happy to serve Barnet, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow, Camden, Hertfordshire and beyond. I do require repayment for the cost of travelling. Both individuals and groups of students are welcome. Available day and evening, I usually tutor 6 days a week.
Willing to travel: 30 miles
Experience: After various school placements, such as teaching classes at St Aidan`s (ranked amongst the highest achieving comprehensive schools in the country), for over five years I have helped a multitude of pupils ranging from as young as six through to mature students.
Having experienced rigorous training, I am an Examiner for a major board and have relished the challenges of marking
candidates` papers. I feel this gives me an invaluable perspective when preparing my students for their own tests.
I am familiar with the different examination boards, particularly AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CIE and ISEB. Covering English and Reasoning where desired, I have prepared students for 7+, 8+, 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations as well as the STEP and PAT tests required for the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. With my tuition, students have gained entrance to the schools of Aldenham, Fulham Prep, Harrogate Ladies, Sedbergh, Charterhouse and Latymer. After my tuition, candidates attained the necessary grades for their university offers, including from Oxbridge, to study courses relevant to our preparation. I also have experience aiding with IB and professional skills tests together with Pre-U and IGCSE.
I am happy to offer tuition for all other syllabuses as well, for example WJEC and for free-standing maths qualifications.
I also offer tuition to adults wanting to improve their own maths understanding and skills, for example to help with their career or to pass graduate skills tests such as Kenexa, SHL and numeracy for QTS etc.
I have helped several students with Asperger Syndrome, those with dyslexia and students who are home schooled, have conditions including severe physical handicaps, speech and language difficulties or have had to change school due to behavioural difficulties. These pupils were often rather behind in their studies. Furthermore, I have been trained for and have taught looked after children and also have experience of helping those for whom English is an additional language.

We did not do much so I can only give a neutral feedback

Joshua is a very patient tutor who tries to go over the topics that our son finds tricky. His relax and laid back approach is very helpful.

Unfortunately my child had an extremely negative experience with Joshua. During the online lesson he did not turn on his video camera (whilst my child had his camera on) or explain the reason for no camera. He fired multiple choice questions at my son without any effort to engage him or help him feel comfortable in the lesson. After 20 minutes my child ended the lesson as he found the experience so stressful. I contacted Joshua afterwards to explain the situation and then re-tried three further times but did not receive any reply or even acknowledgement of my messages. I was very surprised by his extreme lack of professionalism and limited skill in working with young people. Unfortunately he also showed no sign of wanting to learn from any feedback (that I took care to word clearly and gently).
Tutors Response :
The main issue with the lesson referred to here was the student left the session part way through (without any warning). I assumed there were technical difficulties on their side, but after calling the house and mobile numbers, the mum messaged to say the lesson was ended deliberately. The first reason given for this was they did not think I had my camera on. That is untrue as the lesson recording would show, so I am unsure why they thought that. The other was that the multiple choice questions were found to be stressful, but as other teachers know, these are easier than other types. I had already given the information required for them, we referred back to it and I gave as much time as needed to answer each before moving on to something else.
Also to consider is that after they negotiated the time with me, I had to keep it available for two weeks before this part session as they apparently were busy till then. All-in-all I have been treated quite unreasonably by this client and although having considered their messages, having been directly lied about, I did not see much point in debating the matter with them.
As the other feedback repeatedly shows (and from a lot more lesson time together) I have an approachable and patient professional style, that is sensitive to children who struggle with learning.
