I am a Chemistry A Level examiner and a teacher in a sixth form college. I have been tutoring professionally for the last eight years but, in a way, I started this job as a hobby when I was in school meeting friends after school to help them with their revision.
I have a PhD in Biochemistry (Distinction) and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Distinction). My hobbies are varied, but I would mention chess and football.

Experience: I have been a Chemistry classroom teacher for seven years. My resources and worksheets range from introduction of topics to activities that challenge students to the A* grade. I am aware of typical problem areas where students struggle as well as common misconceptions, and I tackle them in ways that students feel comfortable with. In addition to A Level Chemistry, my classroom teaching experience also includes GCSE Chemistry and HND in Applied Chemistry Level 4 and 5 (equivalent to first and second year of a chemistry degree).
My experience as an A Level Chemistry examiner enables me to guide students on how to maximise their performance in exams. I work with my students through mark schemes, helping them to interpret them, and revise independently. I emphasise the need for accurate terminology in explanations and clear working out of calculations. Also, I help students understand the structure of standard exam questions as well as approaches to unfamiliar ones.
In the first lesson I show original documentation for identity, proof of qualifications and DBS (previously known as CRB) to my students and their parents.
My approach to teaching students consists of the following steps:
-To establish a good atmosphere between the student and myself.
-To identify the students current level and the difficulties they are experiencing in the topic we are going to start working on.
-To define the learning objectives for the session so that students have a clear idea of what they need to learn.
-To keep a continuous interaction with the student during the whole lesson though questioning and different activities in order to keep the student engaged whilst I can check if learning is taking place.
-To evaluate the session in terms of what the student has mastered and what needs further work.
-To set homework so that the student consolidates the acquisition of new concepts and skills.

Excellent chemistry teacher for a levels.
Excellent tutor- I contacted Fran when my son was struggling with his Chemistry A` Level syllabus. Within a very short space of time, my son has improved his grades dramatically, and I have witnessed a huge improvement in his confidence and enthusiasm for the subject. I can highly recommend Fran to anyone who needs that additional support to attain their true potential.
I started tutoring with Fran just over a month ago doing a 2hr session each week. I am currently a c/b student aiming for an a/a* in the new spec. of OCR A Level chemistry. Already I have really improved in the areas I find most difficult including spectroscopy and buffers as we have talked through the topics in great depth and worked though difficult problems. Fran has also been great at providing worksheets, helpsheets and past paper questions for all topics on the specification which has been a fantastic aid for my revision. Overall I would highly recommend Fran as a tutor, especially if you are in a position like me where you are aiming for an a/a*.
Early days but Dr Fran seems a really good tutor. Giving regular homework to my son and my son enjoys his lessons.
