Information about Ashwina

I am fully qualified and experienced English teacher currently working in a secondary school and have been for the past 18 years. I teach and tutor key stage 3,4 and 5. I have been tutoring for the past 15 years and have worked successfully with students at primary ks 2 right through to GCSE,A level and MA students.Literature and language are some of aspects of my job that I am passionate about. I am also very interested in literacy intervention, I have set up my own literacy based program that raises literacy levels significantly, this has been running successfully for many years at my present school with significant increase in levels and reading ages. My experience as an English teacher has enabled me to work with a range of students that include EAL, SEN, poor motivation, high ability etc. Over the years I have gained a great deal of experience and knowledge on how best to teach/support these students and my coaching experience has also assisted with this.

As well as my English degree with honours, I also hold qualifications for assessing students of all ages and abilities. When I initially start tutoring I like to assess students using a range of standardised tests that enables me to ascertain their strengths and weaknesses.Retesting is done at regular intervals to measure progress if the parent wishes.
I am happy to work with students with learning difficulties and love the challenge of creating lessons that are fun and stimulating. I would be happy to teach all levels ranging from GCSE,A level to primary.

At present I am tutoring three yr11 students who have moved two levels in 6months and a yr9 boy who also has made two levels of progress and started to enjoy reading and writing! I also tutor a girl who is at primary and wants more help with creative writing and reading comprehension. I have in the past also tutored a girl that was in private school and was struggling with English and barely scraping a level 5 After a year of tutoring with me she gained an 8 in her English Literature and language exam.As well as the above I have successfully tutored students for their key stage 2 SATS in English. I am also a GCSE examiner for English literature and language.
I am very familiar with the new 9-1 English literature and language syllabus for all exam boards.

One of the reasons I changed careers to teaching was that I enjoy working with young people and helping them improve their confidence which will eventually have a knock on effect with their academia. I want to make learning interesting for them and to help them understand that whilst English is a creative subject, there are strategies we can use to help us further enhance our writing and reading skills. There are so many strategies available to help students make learning enjoyable and assessments easier to tackle.

I have also recently tutored students for the UKCAT English assessments, which is the aptitude test that needs to be undertaken prior to going to medical or dental school.

In addition to the above I am also a freelance writer and have had articles published and am now in the process of writing a book.

If you are looking for an English tutor, especially one that is going to be helping your child work through their English literature and language GCSE I would suggest that you start earlier rather than later. In my experience students that start tutoring at the last minute struggle to make gains as writing and reading skills need regular sustained practice and consistent development. I usually give homework each week and work on past exam questions on the chosen text for their school or language paper 1 fiction or language paper 2 non fiction and will feedback each week on key areas that need development using the mark scheme/criteria.

Happy to tutor on line from any area/country.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: At present I work in a secondary school, teaching English and specialising in assessment/literacy intervention.I have over 15 years of tutoring and teaching experience, working with students from both state and independent schools. All my students have made significant progress and gains in English and have built their confidence in reading, writing and overall literacy.

In addition to this I also lead and teach a literacy intervention program at my present school with significant increasein reading ages. It would be fantastic if 3/4 students wanted to be tutored at the same time, I would be happy to travel to you and it may reduce the cost for you if that is a concern.

As well as teaching English I presently also coordinate and teach a specific program linked to increased reading ages to all our years 7s. Approx 89% of these students (approx 290 students) increased their reading ages between 3-36 months in a school year.

Have had many successes student improvements in grades most recent was a student who re took his GCSE English language and moved up 2 grades in 3 months.

I have a current CRB check

Sound training is also something that I have been trained for and have experience with.
Ruth Miskin phonics program.

Ashwina has been great for my son. He is building confidence in his English And understanding the different ways to answer exam questions. Lessons have always been reinforced with homework tasks and he gets feedback so he knows where he needs to improve. Highly recommended.
