Information about Jake

***ONLINE LESSONS and TUTOR`S HOME ONLY***

My name is Jake, I am a fully qualified practicing Barrister covering criminal law, family law and human rights law. I completed my law degree and my masters degree in law at the University of Nottingham. I then obtained a scholarship from the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple to study the Bar Professional Training Course where I was subsequently called to the bar as a barrister by my Inn of Court. In more recent years I completed my doctorate in law at the University of Cambridge.

When it comes to teaching, people learn in different ways and at different speeds and the best teachers recognise this and adapt to their student`s needs. All too often this is overlooked in schools with classes of 30+ students and so those students who need the extra 1 on 1 support often get neglected. This additional supplementary education is exactly what I offer, where lessons are tailored to the students not dictated to the students. This ensures that the student gets the support they need in a calm and encouraging environment. As a former student myself subject to rigorous examinations, I am able to empathise with my student`s situations and provide them with the extra resources they need to excel and not levy the additional pressure that is often afforded to students within mainstream academic institutions.

In relation to subjects like English and Law, I stress student engagement through problem-based scenarios. This is important as it encourages students to not just learn the material but be able to apply it in an exam styled answer, this promotes understanding and mastery of the subject matter. I believe that homework and revision are important factors to learning, indeed they can be equally as important as the lesson itself. However, the key to effective revision is consistency where the emphasis is quality over quantity, 20 minutes each day can be far more effective that 5 hours in one sitting.

For history, my methods are slightly different as history exams and assessments are posed almost exclusively as essay questions as opposed to problem-based scenarios. To reflect this, I dedicate time to essay writing itself to make my students are comfortable with writing in an academic/scholastic fashion. This is important as bad essay structure can lower the mark attainment even if the quality of its content is up to scratch. In dealing the main body of a history syllabus, I find the best approach is chunking the module into smaller topics then layering knowledge gradually.

First and foremost studying is never easy but aside from top quality teaching I provide the reassuring environment that fosters excellence and ensures exam prowess without the stress.

Willing to travel: 50 miles

Experience: Throughout my studies, I have performed a number of tutoring/mentoring roles as a Student Ambassador, advisor for the Citizens Advice Bureau and as a legal advisor for the Legal Advice Clinic. My ambassadorial role contained an academic outreach programme where I was despatched to local schools and colleges to provide supplementary tutoring to students aged 14-18 and promote higher education prospects/diversity and encourage entry onto prestigious and elite courses.

I possess excellent written and verbal communication skills which I have honed through 4 years of court advocacy experience withing the advocacy society and law society. My ability to convey personal understanding and guidance has been measured and tempered through my time marshalling alongside HH Judge Peter Barrie at Shrewsbury Crown Court where I was involved in judicial case work and legal proceedings. Through the mini-pupillage, I completed at Fleet Street Barristers Chambers in London where I worked alongside prosecution and defence barristers I supported the most vulnerable members of society through the justice system, where many had physical and mental disabilities. These skills have made me the ideal candidate to coach, support and mentor students of all ages and academic abilities including those with learning difficulties.
