Information about Gemma
I am an experienced primary school teacher, delivering high quality teaching and learning to children in a range of year groups. I ensure that planning, preparation, recording, assessment and reporting meet childrens varying learning and social needs. I am a highly adaptable and reflective practitioner and would describe my teaching style as exciting, creative and hands-on. I am passionate about delivering innovative and engaging sessions that put the learning experience and wellbeing of the child at its core.
Favouring a multi-sensory and individualised approach to my teaching, I am committed to unlocking the potential of each and every child in a supportive, nurturing and engaging way through the use of personalised learning plans, individual targets and confidence building skills. I firmly believe in the notion of a broad and rich curriculum that is planned and sequenced in a way that enables every child to achieve.
Experienced in both the planning and delivery of a broad range of subjects, I am confident in addressing gaps in knowledge quickly, addressing misconceptions before they become barriers to further learning. Reflection is a key principle of both my own teaching and something I actively encourage throughout every step of a childs learning journey. I am skilled in the delivery of mathematics, facilitating learning through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach in order to build on learning and support children to see connections. My greatest enthusiasm and focus are invested in childrens language and literature, having a particular interest in how children are taught to read. Having a wealth of experience across two key stages I am confident in the teaching of systematic, synthetic phonics.
Although predominantly experienced in the mainstream education setting, I have taught many children who cannot access the mainstream curriculum; due to their social, emotional and developmental needs. As with all children, I ensure they are provided with a safe learning environment whereby they have maximum opportunity to attain and make progress, often through the use of SMART targets. I have worked alongside other educational professionals such as SENCOs, Speech and Language therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists. In doing so I have inputted on Individual Education Plans, curriculum
frameworks and supported children with communication, social and behavioural needs. I have extensive experience in using the Picture Exchange Communication System, visual timetables, Now and Then Task Stations, Choice Boards, Communication in Print and Social Stories as strategies of support.
