Included in the lesson price is the cost of safety and craft materials. The type of beads, wires and findings and techniques offered to learners will change as they make progress, and lessons are planned carefully to ensure early success and maximum motivation, so that even the most impatient learners have a reason to learn patience, knowing that their efforts will be rewarded with the satisfaction of a piece of jewellery, however simple in design, of which they can be proud. Jewellery-making can be more than just a hobby or an extra art lesson for children: it can be a way to build confidence, learn to experiment and be relaxed about the results. After all, beads can always be unthreaded, a new jump-ring or crimp-bead can always be found, or further practice applied when learning a technique before it is used on the finished product. Beads can almost always be re-used if a child wants to start a project over again. Making jewellery, especially threaded and woven bead patterns, can help to build the confidence, resilience, motivation and self-esteem of children who feel that they lack artistic abilities, find concentrating difficult at times, or who have struggled with their fine motor skills. Being trusted and ‘allowed’ to include small or repurposed semi-precious stones in their work brings a new sense of responsibility!
