My name’s John, I am an experienced tutor, and I have both Undergraduate and Masters (M.Phil) degrees from the University of Cambridge in Economics and Management Studies.

My focus is to help students digest their subject, that is, help them to understand and apply concepts rather than just presenting them with facts. This enables them to understand the subject at a deeper level and hence enables my students to tackle unexpected questions whether in the classroom or at exam time. I also tutor students on exam technique as this is critical when attempting to improve grades. I have been successfully tutoring online during the pandemic using a live streaming system which includes audio, video and a virtual whiteboard on which both the student and myself can write and draw graphs.

I am an enthusiastic, supportive and patient tutor, and try to put myself in the student`s shoes and remember how it felt when I was struggling to understand a topic. I then tailor sessions for each student in a way which best caters for their individual aptitude and learning style and am dedicated to help you/your child achieve the grades you/they need.

I aim to develop each student`s thinking style, and guide them to understanding by using the Socratic method (asking questions to get students to actively think about the subject matter), and showing how the topics we cover are relevant to everyday life.

I prepare for each lesson so that during sessions we can make the most of our time.

Experience: I have been tutoring for many years and have helped my students to gain top grades in GCSEs, IGCSEs, IB, and A-Levels. I also prepare students for entrance to university, including Oxbridge, by assisting with personal statements, suggesting relevant wider reading and helping the student digest the material, and when required providing realistic mock interviews.

I also help younger students to improve their knowledge and skills, building confidence and enthusiasm for their subjects, whether for SATs or 11+/13+ style entrance exams, of which I have extensive experience. I regularly help my students to gain places at independent schools including The Perse, The Stephen Perse, The Leys, Abingdon School and King`s Ely.
