Information about Sotiris

Hi there, my name is Sotiris. My educational background is in Mathematics and Physics. I have an MSc in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces and a First Class BSc(hons) in Theoretical Physics. I have 4 years of experience tutoring Maths and Physics at various levels, ranging from the 11+ entrance exams up to the degree level. As of last year, I am also a DBS certified tutor for the reputable tutoring companies of Tutor Doctor and Cavendish Milton, where I combine both in-person and online tutoring. Although the bulk of my tutoring is one to one, I have also tutored group sessions in connection with local schools.

My students often describe my style of teaching as very well structured and thorough. I do not follow a purely mechanical or memory-based approach, as in my experience, this is often both inefficient and ineffective. Instead, I focus on building up a student’s critical thinking skills, such that, instead of memorising results, they can be logically deduced from first principles. In short, I always make sure to emphasise the deductive reasoning that leads to a result instead of simply stating it and asking the student to remember it (like what happens in school!). In this way, students learn to think on their feet and are equipped to handle the pressures of examinations. Furthermore, having completed countless examinations in my life, I have built up an arsenal of exam techniques which my students have found useful. A lack of proper exam technique is often the difference between one grade and the next as a student may possess the required knowledge but struggle to get it on paper for the examiner. Part of improving exam technique is being very familiar with the exam board, and in particular, how they want you to answer their questions. As someone who has taken Maths and Physics examinations with many of the major exam boards, I guide students through this in our exam preparation.

The first discussion I have with a student is a very important one. By the end of this discussion, we will have formulated a concrete goal and a plan to achieve it. Having a concrete goal in mind is always the first step toward attainment, as without attaining it first in the mind how can it be attained in reality? I find that just this step alone serves as a major confidence boost for students.

My lesson structure follows the content, example, problem (CEP) approach. In this way, I start a lesson with the required content for the topic and end a lesson with a problem pack of questions to consolidate the topic’s main themes. The student will then complete as much of the pack as possible for homework, and we review it together the next session addressing any issues that cropped up. Unlike with the school classroom, tutoring is most productive when there is a mutual interaction between tutor and tutee, thus, I encourage student questioning as much as possible. I believe this is the most important part of tutoring.

Don`t hesitate to get in touch. Don`t wait until it’s too late!
