Information about Freya
I am currently a student at Durham University studying for a Geography BA course. Having just finished my first year, I am looking to share my passion for the subject and the subjects I studied at school. I believe that my ability to talk to a wide range of people puts me in good stead for being a tutor as I am able to comfortably communicate ideas and remain willing to adapt my explanations where necessary. I am keen to work with students of all ages, from primary school up to making the transition to university, I am willing to be there every step of the way.
Having been through the process of school examinations, I am aware of the amount of time and energy it can take up. I am keen to use my experience to help others in a similar situation, drawing upon my own experience and new techniques to aid learning.
I believe in teaching someone to study rather than just feeding them information, developing tools for them to develop individually as well as within the tutoring environment.
My interpersonal skills work concomitantly with my ability to be an attentive listener, allowing me to develop a student specific approach where lessons and teaching plans are individualised. This allows me to remain perceptive, picking up on different cues and adapting my teaching methods accordingly.
My time management skills mean that I am not only able to be efficient in availability, lesson planning and advice, but am able to expand this skill in others where necessary.
Availability: I am very flexible with timings and am happy to accommodate in the early morning or after school hours (e.g. between 18:00-19:00). I am also available on weekends.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: - I undertook the International Baccalaureate diploma (IB) attaining 44 points out of a maximum of 45, achieving 7,7,7 at higher level in Biology, Geography and Theatre. This experience has allowed me to continue studying a wide remit of subjects, expanding my wealth of knowledge. I was also able to refine my revision techniques whilst managing my time effectively between the six subjects.
- I undertook IGCSE examination, attaining 9 A*S and 1A. During these examinations I was able to develop many different revision techniques, experimenting to find what worked for me. I believe that the revision process must revolve around the individual, and having practiced a number of different approaches myself, I am well equipped to help others.
- Whilst I have not had any experience in tutoring specifically, I volunteered weekly at primary schools for a total of two years. I was able to communicate with children of different ages, supporting them and helping them in key educational stages. This has allowed me to develop my communication and explanatory skills, working with the individual to help them forge their own understandings.
- I attained one week work experience at a primary school where I was able to assist a leading teacher in a number of different subjects across a number of different ages. This allowed me to understand different teaching methods and offered me the opportunity to use my leadership skills to direct and control the classroom.
- I volunteered weekly at my local Community Advice Centre in 2017-2018. This introduced me to a spectrum of people from a variety of different backgrounds with an assortment of different enquiries. I was able to communicate clearly and efficiently under pressure, honing my interpersonal skills whilst expanding my ability to handle a number of different cases at one time.
