Information about Frederick

Hi, I am Frederick! In June 2018 I graduated from Imperial College London with a 1st Class Honours in Engineering and am currently working as a tutor part-time to support myself whilst I explore career options. I have been tutoring Maths for 11+, 13+ & GCSE since 2016. A comfortable, open and professional relationship is very important to me, and something that I believe reinforces the learning process for my tutees. I believe in keeping both the mind and body healthy through practising mindfulness, having a healthy diet, exercise and engaging in a varied range of hobbies.

Experience: I have been tutoring Mathematics for the past four years, working with students from the ages of 11 to 16 with varying goals, including;

• Long-term teaching to nurture a deeper understanding of concepts included in the National Curriculum.
• Preparation for examinations including GCSE (Edexcel, AQA, OCR), Edexcel IGCSE, Common Entrance (ISEB) and entrance to prestigious schools such as Eton.
• Preparation for scholarship examinations that require students to understand and achieve beyond expectations of the National Curriculum.
• Improving learning techniques including note-taking, organisation, time management, learning from your own mistakes and revision.
• Supporting SEN students to ensure they keep up with the school curriculum.

I have taught students from independent schools including; Albemarle College, Brighton College, Eaton, Emanuel, Fulham Prep, Westminster & Woldingham
Through my own experiences working towards high academic achievement and 500+ hours of tutoring experience, I have become proficient at explaining complex concepts in a variety of ways, making them accessible to all students. Having tutored students from ages 11 to 16 attending a range of independent schools, I have become familiar with ISEB, AQA, OCR and Edexcel curriculum and make sure to stay up to date with any changes in content or examination procedures. In addition to tutoring in homes, I have been lucky enough to tutor at an independent college in London, working closely with staff and teachers to ensure pupils do not fall behind whilst providing one-to-one sessions to those who struggled the most.

Drawing on an extensive range of resources, I offer tailored tuition programs. I monitor and assess performance, developing and implementing specific and comprehensive lesson plans to accommodate the student’s skill level and appropriately challenge and engage the student.

As well as active reflection during lessons, I frequently give homework to solidify concepts learned in class and teach students to learn from their mistakes. This also allows me to keep a careful eye on their progress and give accurate reports to parents/carers.

2018 GCSE New Curriculum – Math (Albemarle Independent College)
I taught the new Math GCSE Edexcel Curriculum to Edgar at Albemarle College. Edgar had sat his Math exam twice already but had struggled to attain the C (grade 5) that he needs. As Edgar was now sitting his A-levels, he could not attend the scheduled GCSE Math classes. I was, therefore, his sole Math teacher, working with him for 4 hours per week to prepare him for his upcoming exam. I taught Edgar at his school (Albemarle College) and worked closely with teachers and support staff to ensure that all necessary support structure was in place. Working at Albemarle has given me a unique insight and experience of the school system, whilst learning a lot from the teachers that I have been working with. I am glad to say that Edgar achieved his desired grade and now has one less exam to worry about.

2017 IGCSE – Math (Brighton College, SEN: Dyslexia)
Bella was bright and eager to learn, challenging me, asking me questions and presenting me with problems that she struggled with. Dyslexia shows itself most prevalently in English, however, it has also had an impact on her mathematics. Principally, I helped Bella improve on areas of weakness identified during her end of year 9 exams to strengthen her foundations. With ambitions to achieve Grade 9 (A*), she is learning quickly and has shown marked improvement, evidenced by her moving up a set in her school year.

2016 GCSE – Math and Science Exam Preparation (Woldingham School, SEN ADHD)
Alia had a lot of trouble with concentration and had been diagnosed with ADHD. Initially, I found sessions challenging, as she was constantly being distracted and moving off-topic. I worked hard towards creating creative lesson plans that were as interactive and engaging and immensely improved her ability to concentrate. Planning lessons to engage Alia whilst ensuring that she progressed quickly and efficiently and solidified her comprehension of key material was a difficult learning curve for me, but one which I have found extremely rewarding. Alia surpassed expectations and achieved a B in her GCSE Math’s exam. Her parents, teachers, Alia and I were very pleased with this result.

2016 GCSE – Math, Physics & Mentoring (Westminster School)
I tutored Gabriel for a year, preparing him for his GCSE exams in June. I developed a very good working relationship with Gabriel, motivating him to be active in his own learning. In addition, I collaborate with his family to ensure that his tutoring is aligned with his full-time education at Westminster.
The biggest challenge with Gabriel was his lack of motivation. He would often do the bare minimum, failing to fully complete homework assignments (beyond the minimum number of questions set) and neatly lay out his work. As a result, he was performing at a D grade, which was well below his intellectual ability. I have worked closely with Gabriel to foster his work ethic, motivation, and passion for learning. I have also assisted him in working more effectively and finding extra-curricular hobbies and activities that he is passionate about.
In addition, I have been helping him lay out his work properly, keeping an organised folder and actively learn from his mistakes. All of which are skills that I know he will find useful in his future. Gabriel went on to achieve a B in mathematics.

2016 11+ – Math (Eton, Kings Scholarship Exam)
I have worked with Aidan primarily to prepare him for his Math exam for Eton’s Kings Scholarship. There is little available in terms of past papers and guidance on the content of the exams, so my approach has been aimed at developing a genuine interest in Math, confidence when faced with complex and daunting questions and competency in using logic to draw on the appropriate skills and knowledge to work towards a solution. In addition, I ensured that he had a comprehensive grasp of the topics in the syllabus. One of my proudest moments in tutoring was when I found out that Aidan had been successful in obtaining the Kings Scholarship at Eaton.
