Information about Laura
I am studying Law at one of the top universities. I have a British accent and as I`ve spoken live on BBC radio and SkyNews I am a clear and confident speaker who can engage well with students.
I studied English Literature, History, Religious Studies (Philosophy & Ethics) and EPQ for my A levels. I received 3 A*`s and got the highest mark in my A-level English and Religious Studies classes for my coursework and exams. Although, I`m studying a law degree I`m highly passionate about humanities and I hope to do a master degree in English Literature. Since young age I`ve also been performing at theatres and in short films, I also did a Drama GCSE and went to Sylvia Young Theatre School, so I`m more than happy to tutor drama too.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have great experience as working with children and young people. I had weeks of work experience at my local nursery that looked after children before, during and after school. I also volunteered at a primary school for months teaching English and RE. Before lockdown I tutored GCSE students for their upcoming exams in my free-time. I believe that often a student helping another student can be more useful than a teacher`s help, because they have taken the exam recently and can share and explain their understanding of the subject in a way that`s easier for their peers. This is especially the case with exams becoming increasingly more difficult over the past years and the changes to the grading system.
Due to the current situation I will be tutoring online, but I have a number of great resources that I will be sharing with the students I will teach. Tutoring isn`t just about the one hour you teach the student but also about how the student can engage with the content and take away what they`ve learnt. Depending on the age and the subject I would hope to provide the students with resources, either pre-task or homework as a way to reflect on their learning. I would hope to talk with the student for 5 minutes at the start of our first session to ask them about their learning styles and what work the best for them, so that I can make sure I will use the tools and resources that will benefit them e.g presentations, videos, pictures etc.
As the teaching will take place online I would hope to discuss with the student or the parent over messages about the app or the platform they would prefer the video call to take place (zoom/skye/microsoft teams). If the student doesn`t feel comfortable with a video call, we could talk about other ways of online tutoring too.
