Experience: As someone who has many years in experience of tutoring students from Grade 5s and 6s to 8s and 9s, I have devised a simple lesson plan that is ensured to not only cover all the bases in a topic but ensure that it is ingrained in the students mind while also teaching them the correct application of that knowledge in exams.
First, we start off with an introduction to the topic by linking it with a topic they would have already covered (e.g: if the lesson were on graph transformation, we would leeway into that from a starter on y=mx + c or vectors)
Then, after establishing their understanding, we build on that by using the material of the topic they want to learn (e.g: show how graph transformations work similarly to vectors) . Then, once we have gone over the content, I always make sure to address any queries the student may have by; giving examples from my own personal question bank, using exam questions, etc..... This stage is vital as it is important that the student fully comprehends what he is dealing with before we drop them in deeper water , or they will just drown.
Then, after establishing their understanding, I give them some practice questions after each facet of the topic is covered to ensure they understand the mechanics of the topic. These practice questions will often range from easy to medium to hard so that the student`s understanding is slowly pushed further and further on a gradual slope until they have reached the maximum potential achievable for the facet of the topic.
Soon, after building the student`s understanding of all facets of the topic, they are then thrown into exam questions. These exam questions not only help establish their knowledge through `active recall` and help them practice the application of the topic. It also allows me as a tutor to see where the student still has faults where they themselves may not recognise and allow me to go over and explain them in an easier to understand manner for the student.
It also helps to build their exam technique so that they learn how to properly approach these exam questions and learn the correct criteria for earning the maximum marks on a question (e.g: exam terminology, how to manage time properly per exam question,etc...)
Of course, many of my students have different requirements for learning (e.g: they are kinesthetic learners and need to constantly be engaged, they learn better through videos ,etc..).
Throughout my lesson, I always make sure encourage my students to ask for help or clarification on something as I am here to make sure they can ask those questions today so that they don`t run through their minds on exam day.
This method of teaching has been proven successful , as demonstrated to me by the students I tutored who achieved A*s in their exams when they only used to achieve as high as a Grade 6 in exams.
