Information about Andrew

Hi, I’m Andrew, and I am a university graduate who holds a First Class Honours degree in BSc Mathematics and has almost 3 years experience tutoring full-time in a secondary school in Northamptonshire.

My lessons are flexible and tailored to my students’ needs. Usually I spend the first couple of lessons establishing my students’ strengths and areas of development, through asking them for topics they find challenging, and, in the case of Year 11, getting them to work through past papers or worksheets I’ve created that check for understanding on a range of topics. I then use the subsequent lessons to go over the gaps I’ve identified in my student’s knowledge (normally one topic per lesson). This allows the student to become more confident with their Maths and gives them the greatest chance of achieving their target grade. As the exam season approaches in April/May, I find Year 11 students benefit from working through past papers with me, where I give my students the chance to attempt the questions before I scaffold how the question should be answered. Although I believe students will make the most progress with a minimum of 15 sessions, I am happy to deliver as many or as few lessons you feel is necessary.

My lessons can be delivered in person or online, either at my house or the student’s (providing they live within a 20 mile radius of where I am based). Due to travel expenses and lost time, I have a slightly higher rate for in-person tutoring.

I love seeing others fulfil their potential to succeed. Hopefully, with my help, students can get the grades they deserve.

Experience: For the past 3 years I have been employed full-time in a secondary school in Northamptonshire as an `Academic Mentor`. In this role I tutored mainly GCSE (Year 10 and Year 11) students on a 1:1/small group basis to help them achieve their target grade in Maths and recover the learning that was lost due to the coronavirus pandemic of 2020-2021. I also worked with students with varying needs in the Internal Provision and supported Year 12 students with resitting their GCSE Maths exams to achieve a grade 5. I have experience working with students of all abilities (grade U-9) in both Foundation and Higher classes, however most of the students I tutored in recent months sat the Foundation papers and worked at grade 2-4.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, 69% of the Year 11’s who had at least 10 lessons with me improved by at least 2 grades by the time of their GCSE exams, which is an achievement I’m absolutely thrilled by! More recently, in January 2023, 2/3 of my Year 12 students successfully achieved a grade 5 in their GCSE Maths resit. Hopefully this all goes some way to demonstrate I’m good at tutoring and have a positive impact on students` attainment in Maths.

In addition to my career as an Academic Mentor, I provide in person private tuition to GCSE students in Northampton outside of school hours.
