Information about Hannah
Hello! I am a friendly, patient and experienced tutor based in Balham. I am a qualified teacher with 8 years` experience teaching in primary, secondary and specialist settings. I qualified first as a secondary maths teacher and I have 2 years` experience teaching GCSE Maths at both Foundation and Higher tiers. I also taught Core Maths (post-16 qualification). After that, I taught for 5 years in a large mainstream primary school. I taught years 3, 5 and 6 but, within those classes, I tailored, delivered and assessed lessons to students working at every primary level including those at the earliest stages of reading and writing. I am currently teaching in a specialist setting, working with KS3-aged pupils who are learning at a KS1/2 level. I therefore have a very varied and broad range of experience to draw on when it comes to tailoring tutoring to the individual needs of each student.
Availability: Monday - Thursday evenings (from 5.30pm) and Sundays.
Willing to travel: 3 miles
Experience: I currently work in a specialist setting for pupils with statements of special educational needs (EHCPs) aged 11-14, working at KS1/2 levels so I have significant experience at tailoring and personalising learning to students who are struggling or lacking motivation. I pride myself on making learning accessible without being patronising and on making it engaging and fun while still being meaningful and relevant to qualifications and to wider life.
Before this role, my most recent experience was 5 years as a class teacher and Maths Lead in a large mainstream primary school in Lambeth. I taught in years 3, 5 and 6 (including preparing for the KS2 SATs) and worked with colleagues to oversee maths provision across the school.
Before I shifted to primary teaching, I taught maths in a secondary school. After gaining my PGCE through the Teach First Leadership Development Program, I worked for 2 years as a maths teacher at a high school in Worcestershire. I taught over 200 pupils aged 13-17 with a wide range of abilities, needs and dispositions. I took two year 11 classes through their GCSE exams. Having marked hundreds of GCSE past papers (both higher and foundation tiers), and having taught 4 classes to the new GCSE specification (9-1), I have a strong knowledge of my subject and the requirements of the curriculum and I am experienced at preparing students of all levels for exams. I have been told in professional observations that my strengths as a teacher lie in effective questioning to address misconceptions and in the differentiated resources I produce to engage students.
I have previously tutored students for 11+ and GCSE exams in maths and history as well as tutoring primary-aged pupils in reading, writing and maths within the KS2 curriculum expectations.
