Information about Laura

Hello! I`m Laura and I`m a Statistical Physics PhD student. I study how systems of many small simple components can work together to become something amazing. Some examples are the atoms in your body, the neurons in your brain, and the bacteria in your gut. My PhD project is on how the interactions between species can affect the stability of an ecosystem, here is a scientific paper I published.

I have loads of teaching and tutoring experience, and I make learning fun! I believe students should be happy and relaxed in order to reach their full learning potential. I understand that every student learns and stores information in different ways, meaning they require different teaching and explaining methods, and I tailor my teaching methods to meet each student`s individual needs. In particular, I have experience in teaching for dyslexia, and have found it interesting to understand how a dyslexic brain works.

I ensure my students fully understand the concepts they are learning, not just to memorise statements or the ability to follow a procedure, but to understand why the procedure works. For the facts that do need to be memorised, I use a variety of long-term memory techniques. I will also teach exam technique, to understand what each mark in the question is asking for. We will go through and understand the mark scheme as well as the question paper, enabling students to pick up marks even when they don`t know the answers.

Experience: I have been teaching and tutoring for the past 7 years throughout my studies at university and have really enjoyed all of it. I achieved really high grades on my maths and science GCSEs and A-levels, this has given me a really good understanding of how to attain maximum possible marks on exams as well as having excellent subject knowledge. I really enjoy sharing my skills and insights with others, helping them to achieve high grades and an appreciation for the subjects. Alongside studying for my PhD I work for the university as a widening participation fellow which involves running a workshop on game theory and behavioural evolution to give an insight into my research to visiting school-children. I also lead tutorial classes for undergraduate courses to supplement lectures. I have worked for a tuition agency for around 7 years, which used to involve visiting schools to give tuition to small groups of GCSE students, but is now online. I also give online tutorials on Tutor Hunt and other platforms. I also have experience working as a teacher in a school, I completed an internship teaching physics with the Ogden Trust, this gave me lots of experience with behavior and classroom management as I was teaching up to 30 students at a time. I have a wide range of experience teaching maths, science, computer programming, and entrance exam skills to students of all ages and levels from primary school to university.

Laura is an excellent tutor, very clear and helpful. Already, in the time she has been tutoring my son, his predicted A level maths grade has increased. She is very reliable with good communication and I would recommend.

My daughter is able to understand her subject better and Laura has been great at identifying and filling the gaps in her knowledge.

Some explanations felt a bit rushed but overall a good experience.
