Information about Michael

I am a Doctoral researcher and practitioner of Educational Psychology at the Univeristy of Birmingham. I have worked in variety of mainstream and specialist education settings with people aged 0-25 for over 6 years. I spent 3 years as a school based psychologist delivering lessons and co-ordinating achievement strategies/interventions. I also have recent experience marking at GCSE level for AQA. This experience has enabled me to understand in depth the demands placed on learners and the expectations of exam boards.

I believe any individual can overcome their own personal barriers to learning and achieving with the right support. I believe in building on strengths, developing confidence and scaling individual ability to ensure success. I take an individualised approach to learning and aim to foster enthusiasm for the subjects I teach. I have applied psychology in both my teaching experience and throughout my ongoing practice to help ensure individuals can reach their potential.

I graduated from Aston Univeristy in 2012 and hold a PGCert in Applied Psychology. My current enrolment at the Univeristy of Birmingham allows me to access update to date research around individual learning, curriculum planning, assessment, achievement and innumerable other topics to inform my tutoring approach.

My 1-1 tutoring sessions can provide:

- An enjoyable, focussed and structured approach to learning based around mark schemes and assessment criteria for each subject.

- Individual/personalised approaches and strategies designed to build on pupil strengths and increase confidence.

- The application of meta-cognitive strategies to consolidate learning and manage performance in exam settings.

- Development of study and exam skills to ensure that pupils are able to prepare for and perform at their best in their exams.

- The use of pedagogical (teaching) theory to structure learning, ensuring the developement of existing knowledge and successful introduction of new information, ideas and topics.

- Marking and detailed feedback on past exam papers set as homework tasks in between sessions.

- Analysis of successful past exam papers and questions to help ensure individual pupil success.

Most of all I can provide enthusiasm, passion for what I do, and ensure a fun and adaptive environment to learn.

I apply metacognitve approaches to help embed learning, manage the emotions and cognitions related to academic performance and facilitate sustained achievement.

I am an easy going, yet driven and passionate indiviudal who enjoys seeing other people thrive. Outside of psychology I enjoy listening to and making music, excersing regularly and visiting new places.

This experience has enabled me to synthesise elects of best practice from a variety of educational settings to develop my own practice to ensure the individuals I work with are able to reach their full potential.

I have a great deal of experience working individually with pupils who experience additional levels of need (as well as with pupils exceeding their expected level of achievement) to help faciliate their attainment.
