Information about Peter

I graduated from Queen Mary College, University of London, with a First-Class Honours Degree in Chemistry. Since then I have had a number of roles in industry, initially in R&D and Technical Services and most recently in Product Management and Marketing. Throughout my working career I have trained and supported countless customers, and have also supported those around me in developing their professional careers. As part of my professional career I became a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (MCIM) through sitting the CIM examinations and through working as a Senior Marketing Manager for many years.

I recently worked part-time with Bright Sparks Science, based in Abingdon, where we were passionate in bringing science to life for children aged 5-11 years, through hands-on science activities including science parties and holiday science camps.

I started tutoring in April 2019 and am currently helping many students across primary education, GCSE and A level studies.

As a person I am positive, supportive, enthusiastic and high motivated.

Outside of work I volunteer for the National Trust at nearby Basildon Park where, I love sharing the stories of this wonderful Georgian mansion with the visitors. I tour National Trust sites with my wife in my old campervan called Mel. I also have a passion for music and love playing the guitar.

Availability: To check for my latest availability it is best to message me. I usually have slots available and can also look at my overall timetable to look to see if slots can be jiggled about to meet with a client`s needs. In general I plan my sessions as follows:

- Daytimes: 9:00am - 3:30pm: students who are available during the daytime, such as those who are home-schooled and those I see in school.
- Early evening slots: 4:00pm - 6:00pm: younger students within KS2 and years 7 and 8 of KS3
- Later evening slots: 6:30pm - 8:30pm: older students within KS3 (year 9), KS4 and KS5.

Experience: Successful tutoring is all about understanding the specific needs and requirements of each individual student. As individuals we need support that is tailored to our needs in order to maximise our success.

I understand that individuals have different approaches to learning and that they come with a portfolio of personal skills and traits. I also understand that confidence and positivity are key to achieving success. So, whilst the academic aspects are important, I balance this with supporting the personal development of each individual. Typical areas that I address with personal development include confidence, ‘learning how to learn’, problem solving techniques, excellence versus perfectionism and exam techniques.

For me learning has to be fun and it has to be relevant. It needs to bring challenges and it needs to bring successes.

I work hard to support all of my students and proactively encourage them to use me as their aide and mentor. I reach out to all of my students to instil confidence, and through positive encouragement I motivate and empowerment them to achieve excellence.

I have a broad base of experience in working with students with learning difficulties including ADHD, Asperger, Autism, Dyscalculia, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. Key to working with such students is the importance of developing tailored learning strategies, approaches and resources that best help these students develop.

Peter helped our twin boys in year 8 who were struggling in maths. Peter was friendly and tried hard to make our sons feel at ease. He adapted his teaching to suit their additional needs, which was much appreciated and we enjoyed our chat at the end of the sessions. We would recommend Peter without hesitation.

Peter has been a fantastic tutor to our daughter. She lost all of her confidence in maths, a subject she used to love, before she began her on-line sessions with Peter. Peter has great patience and really cares about his student`s well being and learning outcomes and has gone over and above to make maths fun and interesting as well as making tricky subjects easier to understand. My daughter has struggled with things like long division for months and yet in one session can now confidently sit down unaided to answer long division questions. My daughter also has a love of science (physics) which Peter has been encouraging too (as he also specialises in science), he finds her interesting things to read and they have a science chat at the end of their session which she really looks forwards to. The on-line content of the lessons is great. It is wonderful to see our daughters confidence in maths blossom and her enthusiasm for science deepen. The increase in her self-esteem and confidence has had a knock on effect in other subjects as well. I can`t rate Peter highly enough.
