Information about George

I am a full-time tutor with over ten years of teaching experience.

Academic background:
Sussex University - PhD Hirschfeld scholar; pass with minor corrections
Sussex University - 1st class honours MMath degree

I`ve spent 6 years working in the data tech industry. I applied math and technical skills to solve data problems and conduct technical training for work colleagues. I worked closely with data engineering technologies, including Python and SQL.

What to Expect From Lessons:
Lessons are delivered in 50-minute batches. They consist of breaking down complex theoretical concepts into simplified components, followed by examples and exam problems to solidify understanding of the topic. I encourage the students to explore the ideas themselves, with me prompting them rather than just writing out formulae (I view myself as a study aide). I focus on sharing deep mathematical insights with my students, a skill I refined as a PhD student.
I aim to make lessons interactive, supportive, collaborative, optimistic and goal-oriented.
I combine this with reinforcing their knowledge of theoretical concepts throughout the lesson.

Session Admin:
- Students are required to bring pen, paper, and calculator to sessions.
- Sessions last 50 minutes in a one hour slot with the remaining 10 minutes used for answering remaining questions, exporting the whiteboard, and booking future sessions. This time may be split at different times.
- Please provide at least 24 hours` notice for any topic requests or changes agreed in the previous session.
- Resources from the student must be sent at least 24 hours before the scheduled session.
- Solutions are sent to problems the student would like me to review with them must be provided in advance.
- sessions cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled time will incur a 50% cancellation fee.
- The full session fee is charged if a student does not attend a booked session without prior notice. I will remain in the session for 15 minutes after the scheduled start time before it`s considered a no-show.
- One-off session availability is allocated on a first-come first-serve basis.
- Homework tasks are set based on gaps in the knowledge of the student observed during sessions. They`re a mixture of tasks from answering open-source problems, understanding definitions, memorising formulae, or research tasks. The homework is to be completed at a pace the student feels comfortable with. However, if the homework list gets too large, session time will be used to reduce the list of tasks.
- One-off session booking requests are accepted maximum 2 weeks in advance.
- Regular sessions must be honoured or cancelled in advance. Missed regular sessions without prior notice will result in the slot being released to another student.
- Additional sessions are offered to any of my students based on my current availability upon request.
- My working hours are between 8am and 11pm UK time. I accepted session requests during these times based on availability.
- I take holidays throughout the year. I will provide notice to my students when these are approaching. I will offer session slots before or after the break to students if they wish to make up for any lost time.
- I discourage the use of calculators and encourage their use only when necessary.

I also deliver group lessons. Please enquire if interested.

My Son recently started lessons with George, we have had other tutors over the years but I can honestly say I have never seen him bounce out of a lesson full of enthusiasm like the way he does after his sessions. He genuinely enjoys his lessons because the learning is totally tailored to how he wants to learn, covering only the things he needs help with not dragging him over all the elements he can already do. In addition George offers late evening lessons which work really well for my son, he struggles between 5pm-8pm when most lessons have been in the past he comes back alive after this time and is ready to study so a 10pm is huge win for him. We are delighted to have found George and my sons confidence has already improved after just 3 lessons and he feels very positive that he has found a tutor that will make the difference to his final GCSE grade.
