I have been teaching English Language for 10 years. I have worked in schools, study centres and been a personal English tutor for high profile international businessmen and politician`s children.

I have helped students gain entrance into the following schools:

Bradfield (13+)
Whitgift (11+)
Whitgift 6th form (16+)
Hampton Boys (13+)
Tiffin School for Girls (11+)
Guildford High for Girls )11+)
King`s School and College, Wimbledon (7+, 11+)
Caterham (11+)
Charterhouse (13+)

My Process:

From early on I establish a "teamwork" approach, boundaries are very clear, but there is lots of opportunity for creativity, fun and engagement. Having privately tutored for many years, it has taught me that the best approach needs to be student focused. The student needs to feel that the lesson is completely centred around them and their needs and the way to do this is to make it personal. It is about making the student understand their strengths and knowing the areas they need to improve in order to reach their potential. As an English tutor, it`s important to get the student`s to be passionate about the subject, I often use films as a way to show how film makers create effects with sound, lighting and characters and encourage them to create this, but they have to use words. By applying the same principles to a slightly altered version it delivers the same teaching in a new way for the student. It is about utilising my knowledge, expertise and passion to provide the students with what they need to navigate their way through the subject in a clear, proactive and exciting way.

As an actor and performer, one of the key skills I have developed is adaptability and flexibility which has proven to be such an important asset to my tutoring. It is so important to adapt and accommodate the individual student based on their age, background, ability and reason for taking lessons. Being able to adapt professionally and strategically is something I pride myself on. To me, tutoring is not just a job, it is part of my passion for the English language. From tutoring English to international students to native speakers it all stems from a passion to communicate and how this is such an important asset to have. For example, when I am looking at comprehension with students. we are not merely reading an extract from a story but experiencing it together. I find that this passion is often received by the students and helps even the most challenging of students to engage. Furthermore, my ability to use language in creative and purposeful ways allows me to pass on knowledge and experience. Finally, my friendly, enthusiastic and professional nature is why I am often so popular both with the student and parent.

Hobbies and Interests:

Outside of tutoring I am a professional writer and actor. Writing has always been a passion and hobby of mine and I am fortunate to be in a position where I can write as part of my living. I have written three plays which have toured the UK and transferred to America. I have just finished my fourth play, working on my fifth and developing further projects for TV and film. I fell in love with writing as a form of expression and to tell stories which can impact people`s lives, their attitudes and change the world. I have been so affected by poems, plays and stories in the past that it made me realise how powerful and profound language can be. It is this passion for language which drives my tuition and lessons.

My work has been staged and broadcast in the UK and America and has been featured on BBC Radio 2 and XFM.

My passion for writing and the English language goes beyond the classroom and I believe that this creativity and enthusiasm flows into my classes and interaction with the students.

In my 10 years teaching I have gained a lot of experience from the different schools and circumstances of teaching I have faced. I feel that I have grown into a confident, creative and considerate teacher, paying particular attention to students needs and aiming to form good relationships with all students. I also feel that my writing outside of the classroom has helped me in gaining confidence in the classroom.

Alex has been tutoring my son for approximately 6 weeks and I am very pleased to say that we have seen positive results in Sam`s recent mock results which is very pleasing. I have to say that Alex is one of the best tutors I have come across. He is professional, enthusiastic and genuine. He takes his tutoring very seriously and every lesson is generally followed up with an email of homework. My son likes working with Alex and benefits from Alex`s tutoring style - he says Alex makes things easier for him to understand - more so than teachers at school. I would highly recommend Alex as a tutor for your child. Thank you Alex!

Alex has started tutoring my son for 11+ English a couple of months ago and he really enjoys the lessons. Alex has a very structured approach, calm and constructive. All lessons are being followed by detailed feedback on the progress and the home work. Of course, the result will show but it looks like Alex has the right approach and I feel that my son is making good progress.

Alex is currently working with my two teenage sons. He is targeting exam questions with them. They are motivated and believe they can achieve higher exam results as they can already feel an improvement in their work and have a better idea of what is actually required of them in the exams.

I had the great opportunity to have Alex as my tutor for almost 2 months. He is very helpful and he has a lot of patience. I searched for an english native tutor, but I was quite apprehensive as my level was very low and I wouldnt like to be judged. Alex gave me confidence since the first class, he always helped and never judged me, actually he always pointed out my progress and my skills. With him I improved my writing, my speaking (i had many compliments from my manager in my previous job in London) and my listening (I am able to watch english movies without subtitles!). In only 2 months my level went up. Sadly I could not keep with the lesson as I was coming back to Brazil. As a result, I could get a great job in Brazil as here they need people that knows well english. I totally recommend him, he is friendly and he cares about your progress, he is very calm teaching. You will definately improve your english. I wish I could had done more lessons with him. (The price is totally fair for what he gives you!) Thanks, Alex!
