In addition, I am exceptionally experienced teaching the 9-1 specification GCSE English Language/Literature and Common Entrance Exams, 11 and 13 plus. Previous work experienced has encompassed Primary and Secondary Education. I am also an established Private Tutor. I understand the importance of creating stimulating lessons where the learner engages and is motivated. My student success rate is very high and my experience stems many years. I enjoy teaching and the whole learning process. I believe that results can be achieved as I prioritise the learning goals of the student. I have an excellent proven track record where student achievement and progression has been met.

Availability: Flexible at the moment Mon-Sat am and pm.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I am experienced at teaching children on a one to one basis and I have also taught children with dyslexia and hold a Certificate in this area. Furthermore, I have a Specialist Advanced Teaching Diploma in Literacy and have enabled both young and mature adults to gain relevant qualifications in Functional Skills English, GCSE English, and Access to Higher Education courses, Creative Writing, CV, Interview Techniques and A Levels. I also have relevant teaching experience in teaching English as a Second Language. I am particularly skilled at exam preparation including mock papers, revision techniques and examination timings. I am experienced at working with most exam boards such as Edexcel, AQA, OCR, IGCSE, WJEC EDUQAS, EDI, NCFE and City & Guilds.

I believe that learning should be interesting and enjoyable. I feel that a good start to any learning programme is to ascertain the areas for development. This may take place as an assessment which is normally written but can also be carried out verbally. I also take into account the learning styles that best suit the learner be it visual or auditory. A learning Plan can then be constructed which has the objectives of the student; to their satisfaction. My aim from that point is to enable the student to reach their goals, develop confidence with their English and enjoy the success in getting the exam results they desire.

My son required extra help with Eng Lang GCSE exam. During the first visit Deborah told my son that his Eng paper (mock) had been marked too generously. This immediately knocked my sons self confidence. Deborah has a very set way of teaching and my son felt that pressured to work her way, so much so that my son showed her a piece of work during his last session and she blatantly told him that she would not comment as it was not structured the way she wanted. Again this was disappointing. Furthermore Deborah insisted on cash in hand every time , when I suggested bank payment she insisted on cash. Overall not a very good experience for my son .

I taught your son Isaac for only over a couple of sessions and you indicated that you wanted support for your son’s upcoming exams in the summer of 2023. I immediately informed you that time was quite short but that with intense support, I would be able to prepare your son for the exam. In the first session, I carried out an assessment which indicated that he was quite weak in understanding the exam questions and he was unaware of the subject terminology required to pass the exam successfully. At this stage, I provided you with the information and devised a study programme with both you and your child’s consent. Your son did not engage with the lessons, and he stated that he was ‘not’ going to implement any of the techniques we were working on in the exam. I was quite baffled with his statement. He was also very dismissive during the sessions and did not engage.

In relation to his teacher’s mark for the mock paper he completed at school, I discussed with your son and as you are both aware, my comments were not in any way negative, they were reflective of the mark scheme and my experience as an Examiner.

In the final 5 minutes of the session, Isaac presented me with a question that he had worked on in his school and I informed him that it would be beneficial if I had a copy of the extract he had worked on in order to mark this piece of work. He was unable to produce it. I did not have time to read his work properly as we were finalising and discussing homework. Additionally, please note it is ‘unethical’ for tutors to mark student’s work when it is supposed to be marked by their teacher in their school. This is very different to a tutor providing comments on schoolwork and should not be confused.

In relation to the ‘cash’ payment, I indicated from the outset my preference for cash payment, if you were unhappy with this arrangement, then you should not have proceeded with the booking. The lesson was f2f and for many tutors that is the normal method of payment. In fact, you attempted to pay with ‘foreign currency’; I then was short of payment for a week and had delivered the lesson. I felt this behaviour from a parent was untrustworthy.

Deborah, tutored my son for English and literature running upto GCSE. Her knowledge of the subject, technique and tenacity made a huge difference and great impact.. Deborah was excellent in every way. She picked up our son from where he was and step by step unpicked gaps and patiently guided him to his excellent grades. No matter where your child is at there is always something more from Deborah. I cannot recommend her enough. Thank you so Deborah!

Written by a GCSE Student, My first lesson with Deborah was later along my GCSE career. Obviously with anybody looking to select a tutor, you would normally look for one with an exemplary track record producing great results. This was one particular factor which stood out with Deborah. As my first lesson went by our first encounter was great. She was and still is very polite and patient, Deborah first evaluated and assessed me by asking multiple questions and giving exam style booklets to really find my weak spots to then assist me in the most. Deborah did not hesitate at all to locate my flaws and set tasks for me to correct them immediately. This helped me find my path and speed very quickly and I am sure your children will too. Unfortunately due to the pandemic being a major concern through March 2020 when the UK went into Lockdown, Deborah could not come one to one in person, however quickly suggested setting up a zoom account and continuing our sessions online. Her work ethic and arrangement is outstanding and mindset towards motivation has by far exceeded mine and my parents expectations. Ever since I had Deborah tutoring me for English I have seen a noticeable improvement in my grades and scores in daily assessments, this all has led up to my GCSE’s. On the 20th May 2021 I sat my final English paper, feeling confident and proud of the answer I wrote. This never would have been possible without the help of Deborah, and for that I am truly grateful. Deborah has been a prestigious aid in my GCSE and I highly recommend her as a tutor, she has great patience and strategies to get the top grades, I would not hesitate to start as soon as possible.
