Information about Philip

I teach GCSE English, TEFL, IELTS, 11+ Verbal, Psychology and Sociology A-level

Availability: Weekday evenings and weekends.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I`m a highly qualified and experienced tutor. I have been tutoring and teaching different subjects for 20 years in a wide variety of contexts and to all sorts of people. I have previously taught GCSE and IGCSE English in international schools and privately;; psychology A-level in UK high schools, and sociology, politics and philosophy in two UK universities. I have been employed by the Royal Air Force of Oman, the Royal Saudi Air Force, and the UK Ministry of Defence as an English language specialist. My main areas of expertise are:

1) GCSE and IGCSE English (all examining boards)

2) Social Science subjects, including Sociology, Psychology, Politics, and Philosophy.

3) TEFL / ESOL too all ages and levels, including English for specific purposes (law, medicine, business, finance, technical subjects, aviation, security, diplomacy, international relations, military) and English for academic purposes.

4) Test preparation, including TOEFL, IELTS, post graduate admissions tests GRE, GMAT, verbal reasoning, 11+, SATs.

I have taken quite a lot of students preparing for GCSE English resits over the past 7 years and so far have had 100% success in getting students the pass they want and need.

Over the years what I have found is that the best approach is flexibility. I see teaching as a craft and a good craftsperson will keep abreast of the latest tools and choose different tools for different types of tasks, adapting to student needs and different learning styles. As well as being a teacher I am a practising psychologist and have a good grounding in the psychological dynamics of the learning process. One of the techniques I advocate is that of spaced repetition, a memory technique to assist with the retention of new information.
