Information about Tom

An effective Cambridge-educated tutor working for 5 of the top London tutoring agencies but taking on a handful of students directly. Today, I specialise in the following:

SCHOOL ENTRANCE EXAMS
(teaching 11+ and 13+)
I know what tends to come up, understand what’s expected of applicants and can diagnose the best way to cover the material in the time. And I empathise; I vividly remember being tutored for the 11+ myself.

MATHS
(teaching up to GCSE level)
I love Maths for the opportunity to solve thorny problems, not to endlessly repeat variations on the same questions. When taught well, Maths should be great fun and very satisfying.

ENGLISH
(teaching up to university admissions)
I chose to pursue English for the depth, diversity and ambiguity of the subject, but I know these same qualities make others feel at sea. If this is you, don’t worry: like anything, once you’ve understood the goal you can break down the steps to get there.

RELEVANT QUALIFICATIONS:
Double 1st Class BA in English from the University of Cambridge (2012), and an MA from Sussex the following year.
As at A Level in English, Maths, Art and History (2012)
A in AS Level Geography (2011)
11 A*s at GCSE (2006)

STYLE:
Passionate, friendly and constructive. I draw on wide interests (design, theatre, business, technology…), bring abundant curiosity to class & practise the tutoring pedagogy, which can be found at the Tutoring Standards website.

BACKGROUND:
Coming from three generations of educators, I`ve inherited something like a teaching gene, and I’ve certainly found little else quite as satisfying as making progress with a struggling student. So, after five years in consulting and technology, I returned to my first love - teaching.

Outside of work I enjoy theatre, behavioural economics, all things design, and reading and writing as widely as possible.

FEES:
Are discounted; I cost at least 20% more through agencies.

Availability: I have newly allocated Saturdays for private students. During the week I have an almost full slate with commitments to my agency students, although there are a few slots still available in particular areas of London, most of them later in the evenings and so likely more suitable for older students.

Willing to travel: 8 miles

Experience: I first started teaching over a decade ago, when I taught four students at KS3 and GCSE level in English, Maths and Science, helped three students for their university applications, one student for his university dissertation and a number of Cambridge applicants during interview prep days. I then worked in consulting and technology, before returning to tutoring earlier this year. I`m currently teaching eight students through some of the top London agencies.

5/5 Rating

Tom is a fantastic tutor, very organised, knowledgable and intelligent. We were really pleased with his approach, he kept things simple without reducing them and was able to stretch our 8 year old. We recommend him highly!
