Information about Bridget

Hello! My name is Bridget, I’m a final-year PhD student in neuroscience and I have been tutoring since 2017. As a neuroscientist, I have expertise in both psychology and biology, but more importantly I have a real love for teaching. My approach is to create an environment where ambitions are high, but the stress/pressure is low. There is truly no such thing as a stupid question, and mistakes are nothing to be embarrassed about, as this is how we make progress in our knowledge! I particularly enjoy working with students who lack confidence and/or are neurodiverse, and can therefore really benefit from the one-on-one attention that private tutoring offers.

In my experience, students who are struggling simply need a tutor to take the time to explain things clearly, at their own pace and without making them feel silly for any areas they don’t yet understand. With my excellent subject knowledge combined with my patient, kind and encouraging approach, students quickly find material they thought was impossibly confusing is actually well within their grasp. Often in schools, teachers simply don’t have the time and resources to give each student the attention they need to thrive. I find it very rewarding to provide that and as a result see students realise their talents.

I believe the best results come from genuine engagement with and enjoyment of a subject. I have an endless fascination for biology and psychology, and by sharing this enthusiasm I find learning can be a joyful experience where students feel a passion for their subject; it should never feel like a chore. My lessons are collaborative, and never passive or lecture-style. We work together to improve their depth of understanding (rather than students just sitting listening to me talk and most likely quickly losing focus and getting bored).

I expect a lot from my students and equally put a huge amount into my teaching. My aim is to create challenging lessons that push my students to question and think more deeply about a topic, while creating an environment where they feel confident to explore ideas, to ultimately to improve their exam performance and interest in the topic.

Availability: I can be very flexible including daytimes, evenings and weekends. Please contact me with your availability and I`m sure we can find a time that suits you.

Experience: I have been tutoring since 2017, and have taught many students long-term, for example supporting them for the entire two years of their A-level course. I also provide one-off or short-term lessons for students who want to focus on a particular area of their course. I have a record of success in helping students improve their grades and gain places in their desired university degree course.

I have 10 years of experience studying and working in the field of neuroscience research. I will be submitting my PhD thesis in dementia research this year. I have a great interest in human biology, genetics, health and disease. As a PhD candidate I have also gained teaching experience through supervising undergraduate students visiting our research institute and taken courses in teaching to improve my skills as an educator. I excel at explaining complicated concepts in a clear, easy to understand way. I can also provide students advice on university applications and a career in science.

I take a highly personalised approach to tutoring, and will spend my first meeting with a new student discussing their goals and needs in detail. I make an individualised learning plan for each student I teach, so expectations are mutually agreed on from the start. I have extensive experience in teaching at both GCSE and A-Level and have created my own learning materials which I share with my students, which align with the exam boards and required syllabus content. I set clear learning objectives and take a methodical and structured approach to keep my students focused and on-track to achieve their goals.

If required, I set homework and help students develop their own revision plans to aid learning between lessons. As a neuroscientist I take a great interest in methods of how people learn. I pride myself in not only teaching students the course material, but also equipping them with skills they can use for any future studies.

I understand that exam success is a top priority for my students, so right from the start I use past exam questions in my lessons. I have found that many students struggle with exam technique, so I use my many years of experience and familiarity with the style of questions found in exam papers to ensure my students have the tools they need to achieve their goals. Students often come to my lessons feeling understandably frustrated that they may understand the course material well but struggle to translate that into the grades they are hoping for. GCSE and A-Levels as taught in schools often leaves little time for focus on exam technique, so I make this a top priority. I find it incredibly rewarding to see students ‘crack the code’ when it comes to exam technique and start to understand exactly what the exam papers are asking of them, and find this reflected in their higher grades.

I have experience working with students who are autistic or otherwise neurodiverse, suffer from significant anxiety around their school performance, or who have learning difficulties and other complex educational needs. I have a good knowledge surrounding mental health and I understand how this can make studying challenging; I have previously worked with several students taking time out of attending school full-time, or resitting academic years. I am deeply invested in my students’ confidence with a subject and their overall wellbeing. I consider my tutoring a success only when I have improved both my students’ grades and their self-belief in their own academic abilities. I am a kind, positive person and I bring my own experiences of education to my teaching in order to better help my students with the challenges they face. For example, I myself am dyslexic and this has not been a barrier to my academic success. I have also started learning a language and taking private lessons, so I know exactly what it is like to feel a little confused and out of my depth getting to grips with a new subject! I bring this understanding and empathy to all my students, so please do get in touch - I look forward to meeting you, and working together to make learning a positive experience.
