Information about Arlene

I graduated from an integrated masters in Physics and Philosophy at Oxford University in 2021 with a high 2.i. My thesis ‘Epistemic Injustice and the Case of Child Abuse’ was nominated for the Elizabeth Anscombe Thesis Prize. Prior to university, I was a Hong Kong team member training for the International Mathematics Olympiad and the International Physics Olympiad. In 2015, I represented Hong Kong at the China Girls Maths Olympiad and won the Bronze medal. Therefore, I am knowledgeable and skilled in teaching both humanities and STEM subject areas.

In my free time, I enjoy a wide array of artistic interests such as classical ballet (grade 8 and intermediate vocational level), classical guitar (grade 8), literature, and figure skating. I am a native speaker in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I am an admissions advisor for art schools (foundation, UG and masters) and was an Oxbridge admission consultant. I have successfully coached 4 students into Oxford by providing them a holistic preparation plan on personal statement writing, interviews and general knowledge building. I also provided exam preparation courses and tutoring sessions for GCSE and A-levels (Physics, Mathematics, Further Maths, Chemistry) and Oxbridge admission tests (PAT, MAT, TSA, BMAT). Currently, I provide personal statement coaching for 20+ Chinese students for foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate admissions to UK art schools, with successful cases being admitted to prestigious destinations such as Royal College of Art, Central Saint Martins and Goldsmiths College.

My tutoring approach focuses on grasping the fundamentals, shaping thought processes, and exam techniques. I often like to let the student explain to me their understanding, and then help them untangle the difficulties they are facing or the misconceptions they have. I believe that building a robust conceptual and thinking framework is the most sustainable and effective way to excel in examinations and in life for the long run.
