ROUND 1
• GL-style entrance examination
• English, Verbal Reasoning
• Preparation for comprehension, vocabulary and relevant Verbal Reasoning skills
• Accuracy and speed developed progressively

ROUND 2
• Written English paper
• English requires written responses rather than multiple choice
• Close reading, inference and interpretation
• Accurate, well-developed written answers
• No official HBS Round 2 past papers are released

QUEEN ELIZABETH’S SCHOOL (QE BOYS)

PURE ENGLISH PAPER
• Comprehension and SPaG – no Verbal Reasoning or Non-Verbal Reasoning
• Long, demanding comprehension passages
• Detailed questions requiring close and accurate reading
• Vocabulary in context
• Grammar, punctuation and spelling
• Speed, accuracy and stamina under timed conditions

QE preparation requires genuine command of English. Familiarity with question formats alone is not sufficient for the level of reading and language tested.

• Comprehension – close reading, inference, retrieval, vocabulary in context and analysis
• Creative Writing – structure, descri ption, sentence control, vocabulary and accuracy
• Advanced Vocabulary – developed through comprehension, discussion and writing
• SPaG – grammar, punctuation and spelling
• Verbal Reasoning – where relevant to the target examination
• Timed Practice & Mocks – introduced progressively as examinations approach

HOW TUITION WORKS

• Live online lessons via Zoom
• Maximum 5 pupils per group
• All lessons taught personally by me
• Year 4 foundation and Year 5 11+ preparation
• Regular homework and individual marking
• Periodic assessments to monitor progress
• Preparation adapted to target schools

EXPERIENCE

I have taught English for 30 years and specialise in 11+ English. Pupils I have taught have gained places at HBS, QE Boys, Wilson, Tiffins, Latymer, Haberdashers’, Merchant Taylors’, North London Collegiate, St Helen’s, John Lyon and other selective schools.

My teaching is skills-led: strong comprehension forms the foundation for vocabulary, accurate written English and confident Creative writing. Examination technique, timed work and mocks are added progressively as pupils approach the 11+

Availability: Monday to friday- 5pm-7pm
Weekends - 11am -2pm
