Information about Jodie

Hello, my name is Jodie. I am currently studying a PhD in Education Policy at The University of Nottingham. I am friendly, enthusiastic, organised and I have 9 years of experience tutoring students with a range of abilities, both at home and in a school environment.

Approach To Tutoring:
My approach to tutoring is very much dependant on the student. I believe that different people are suited to different learning styles and therefore I always take the first couple of sessions to assess how a student likes to work and what their difficulties might be.

I like to set `homework` tasks - even if they are very short - to encourage the student to develop the skills they are learning in their own time. I am happy to mark additional work and essays and to e-mail students with any advice or feedback that they may require whilst working on a particular assignment.

Availability: My availability depends on the number of students I am currently working with, and could be daytime, evenings or weekends.

Willing to travel: 4 miles

Experience: Summary of Tutoring Experience:

I teach undergraduate and Masters students in Sociology and Social Policy at The University of Nottingham.

Over the past seven years I have privately tutored numerous children and adults in English Literature, English Language, Social Sciences, and Mathematics.

For five years I have mentored students applying to Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities as part of the Oxbridge Mentoring Scheme run by Insight Education. This involved supporting students throughout the entire admissions process, including writing their personal statement, interview preparation, support with developing their analytical skills and preparation for entrance examinations.

For two years I worked as an academic tutor in an inner city comprehensive school in London. Here I tutored sixth form students in English Language, English Literature, Social Sciences, and Media Studies. A large component of this role was supporting students with essay writing skills and study skills and I am happy to support students with these skills in a general way, or in relation to a specific subject. In this role I also coordinated and ran summer school transition programmes for students moving into year seven, and tutored mathematics and English to year seven students. I am therefore comfortable teaching and supporting students from a range of different year groups.

I have tutored GCSE English to students who have been excluded from mainstream school, and students who are struggling to pass GCSE qualifications. Several of my roles have contained a motivational and mentoring aspect, and I have lots of experience of getting students organised in their approach to study.

Summary of Academic Qualifications:

A levels in English Language, English Literature and Sociology all at grade A
BA English Language and Literature (2:1) from The University of Oxford
MSC Social Policy with Distinction from The London School of Economics and Political Science
MA in Research Methods (Social Policy) with Distinction from The University of Nottingham
I am currently undertaking a funded PhD in Education Policy at The University of Nottingham

As I have degrees and post graduate qualifications in English Language, English Literature and Social Science subjects and I am happy to teach these up to degree level. I have tutored key Stage Two mathematics privately for five years and I am and I am up-to-date with the curriculum and preparation needed for Key Stage Two SATS examinations.
