I am a warm and welcoming person, who knows how to be patient and understanding when teaching students. I understand that different students have different needs, and can tailor lessons appropriately towards their individual strengths and weaknesses in order to see the best improvement in ability. My great enthusiasm for music of all styles means I can work well with students from all kinds of backgrounds, and can find ways of engaging students with a wide variety of different content. Whether looking for a tutor to work towards an exam, piece of coursework, or just to develop general musicality, I work in an enjoyable but focused manner to help see an improvement in a students musical understanding.
As a music graduate I have learnt to be self-driven and motivated, with strong organisational skills and a high standard of working, and I am also a competent player of several instruments. This makes me a versatile and adaptable musician who can impart a substantial amount of musical knowledge, and can help students become well-rounded musical learners. I have an advanced understanding of musical harmony, lots of experience performing a variety of musical styles, and am a patient and understanding teacher, and thus can help students develop technical, theoretical and notational skills in a relaxed but focused manner.
Availability: I work 3-4 days a week during the day, and am always finished by 6 in the evening weekdays, and by 5 weekends. I am given my rota the week before, so have time to arrange lessons before 6 each week, but could establish a fixed weekly slot after these times.
Willing to travel: 2 miles
Experience: I studied an undergraduate course in Music at the University of Sheffield for 3 years, through which I have learned how to analyse and understand music from across the spectrum, from Wolfgang Mozart to Wes Montgomery. The areas I covered included musicology, performance, composition, orchestration and music production, which is why I consider myself a good all-round musician, who can consider music from a range of different viewpoints. As such, I can confidently cover the broad range of musical topics that are addressed in most GCSE and A Level syllabuses, and can provide students with a well-informed understanding of music. I have given instrumental tuition whilst at university and taught children at music workshops in the past, making me comfortable working with students of all ages.
I achieved a first class honours in my degree, reflecting my high level of understanding of these wide-ranging areas, and have a lot of experience as a practising musician in both performance and composition. I have conducted paid research for the university, for which I am to be named as co-author in a book chapter my tutor will be publishing in the coming year, and I also received the following 4 academic prizes whilst studying at university:
Ms Stewart Blake BMus Prize Highest Overall Mark in Final Year of Study
Ms Stewart Blake Dissertation Prize Highest Mark in Final Year Dissertation
Pro-Vice-Chancellors Commendation One of the Highest Overall Final Year Marks in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Sir Thomas Beecham Scholarship Highest Overall Mark in First Year of Study
