Information about Vladimir

The success of any tutoring depends on tutor’s knowledge and experience, as well as available resources.

The common problem I see again and again that junior tutors are focused entirely on helping their students to achieve the immediate goals or in their words “ to get better at Maths”, while the students really need to get better at learning Maths. As a result, it would take longer for a learner to master the concept and the retention of the obtained skills would be poor.

The importance of having growing mindset, be responsible for their own learning, and focus on deeper understanding for students are well recognized by qualified teachers. However, the fact that learners tend to lack knowledge and/or practical skills to do so is often overlooked and, therefore, the available support is both limited and inefficient. It requires experience for qualified teachers to implement research informed methods and balance out the directions with overriding objectives.

I have a PhD in Finance and I was qualified as a teacher of Maths in 1998. Additionally, I have a lot of international experience (Russia, South Korea and UK) teaching students of all abilities and various social backgrounds. I am a member of MEI and examiner in Mathematics for CIA . Therefore, my strength is that I am well positioned to ensure that my students are always equipped with the relevant knowledge, skills and tools. I am a co -founder of a web portal Maths Village “The Art of Maths”, www.theAofM . All my tutees enjoy the premium level access to it’s resources free of charge.

For example, when a student’s answer is wrong , he or she is usually required to note a correct answer and to know how to obtain it. Obviously, it is more important to know why the answer was wrong, as otherwise you do not know what needs to be fixed. Every time when the task is ill defined, solving it would be wasteful. Additionally, my students know that when the answer is wrong they have to explain why the error was not spotted and what could be done about this going forward.

Experience: I am very passionate about mathematics and determined to share my passion, knowledge and experience with your students. I have sound mathematical education (MSc in Mathematics and PhD in Mathematical Finance) and recent pedagogical training in teaching Maths (PGCE Maths from st Mary’s university; 2017). I truly enjoy mathematicss and I firmly believe it is very beneficial for students to have passionate teachers. I am very passionate about teaching. Others point out that at my lessons “my enthusiasm is totally infectious”. I am confident I will be able to be both efficient and productive at my job. It goes without saying that I will enjoy it too.

I believe that everyone can benefit from the sound knowledge of maths. I am willing to offer my practical experience of using maths to inspire and support learners.

My strength is that I know from my own experience the importance of mathematical perseverance. Students at any level and all abilities will struggle with maths, they might feel completely lost and might start to doubt their ability to be good at maths. The learning of maths for me is like sailing on a boat with big waves: it is vital for the maths teacher to be able to support students. I am very serious about providing my students with such support. I strive to be supportive and encouraging teacher.
