Information about Louisa

I am an enthusiastic, patient and organised tutor. I have over six years` experience tutoring beginners’, GCSE (including iGCSE) and A-level French, Russian, English Literature and History at different levels.

I am fluent in French and Russian, having studied them as an undergraduate at Cambridge University, including one year spent in Moscow and Paris. Since graduating, I have kept up my linguistic ability by tutoring, assisting French and Russian speaking clients while working as a solicitor and frequently visiting France and Russia. My degree included extensive analysis of literature and history which, coupled with my A-levels in English Literature and History, means I enjoy tutoring English literature, History and assisting with essay writing more generally.

I have always enjoyed building a rapport with my students and increasing their enthusiasm for a subject to help them reach their full potential. For instance, one of my students recently achieved 88% in his French oral exam, having achieved 60% in the previous year.

I plan my lessons thoroughly and make them engaging and varied to retain students` attention. For instance, if appropriate I include games, quizzes, and short videos, as well as reading and discussing texts or doing tests where required. I also have experience of the AQA, Edexcel and other exam boards and am happy helping students prepare for exams with reading, writing, listening and speaking exercises. I have a wealth of materials I can use, but I can also help students with specific projects. I have helped students

Having worked as a solicitor for several years, I left law last year to complete a Masters in International Relations. I recently finished the Masters and am currently pursuing a career change.

Availability: Monday - Friday, 09.00 - 20.00.

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: I am an experienced tutor of beginners’, GCSE and A-level French, Russian and English Literature.

Main experience:

- French, primary to 7 year old girl, Marie (2014-6):

I taught French to Marie on a weekly basis for two years and we built up an excellent rapport. As Marie was already bilingual English-Russian, she picked up a third language quite quickly and I had to work hard to ensure she continued to progress at a good pace. I made sure the lessons were entertaining by preparing plenty of different exercises and games that would capture her attention. We covered topics such as daily routines, holidays, food and drink, and transport.

- French GCSE to 15 year old boy, James (2014-5):

I taught French to James in the period coming up to his exams. Our main focus was on the exam preparation, so we covered GCSE practice exercises in reading, writing, speaking and listening. James was shy, lacked confidence in French and was lagging behind in his classes. I ensured I was encouraging and endeavoured to make him more enthusiastic about French, for instance by finding texts about football and other areas in which he showed an interest. We focused on speaking in particular.

- Russian GCSE to 15 year old boy, Henri (2012-3):

Again, we covered the GCSE Russian syllabus in the period coming up to Henri’s exams. I made sure I tested Henri on what we had covered in previous weeks regularly, but in a relaxed manner, to ensure his level improving. Henri made a lot of progress and achieved an A* in his exams.

- EFL to adult (Russian native), Yulia (2012-3)

I taught English as a foreign language to Yulia. I had to be flexible about timings and location because Yulia had a pressured job with variable hours. Yulia’s English greatly improved over the course of a year, particularly her speaking and listening skills. I made sure the lessons were stimulating by learning Yulia’s interests and finding suitable articles and videos for us to discuss.
