Information about Luke

I am a 26 year old qualified English teacher.. I specialise in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and am particularly skilled in Shakespeare, literature and language. I also have a degree in drama (BA With Honours) and this gives me a wide breadth of knowledge surrounding textual analysis, language and also essay writing. I am patient, warm and knowledgeable and always happy to help!

Availability: I am available extensively during this current global crisis. I will respond to queries and questions within 2 hours and from there will consult my diary and we can arrange a time that is mutually convenient.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I am a graduate with a PGCE with QTS in Secondary English at the University of Sunderland. This challenging and incredibly rewarding training year has taught me so much both personally and professionally. Both of my teacher training placements have provided me with valuable experience in a range of settings. My initial placement at Scarborough UTC provided me with the opportunity to work in a school Ofsted deemed as ‘Requires Improvement.’ This allowed me to work intensively on behaviour management, differentiation and allowed me to learn more about how to scaffold work for a varied range of abilities. I also worked alongside my mentor, the director of the subject, to bring a scheme of work to life. I have worked extensively with Year 10 classes to deliver the content relevant for ‘A Christmas Carol’ and have supported students in workshops and speaking and listening assessments. In the same placement I was also fortune enough to work on one to one intervention with GCSE students and was able to deliver A – Level classes, which was a new, varied and exciting challenge.

In my second training placement I was supporting the English department in the delivery of GCSE resit classes for students. This contrast saw me focus on the language areas of the curriculum, meaning I have now developed both GCSE literature and language experience. I worked to the EdExcel exam specification and received extensive training in understanding mark schemes and how to teach relevant and engaging content for the exams.
Some of my specific strengths are KS4 English, alone with KS3 and KS4 Shakespeare, exam preparation and English Literature. I have also worked with KS3 students on writing lessons and tasks. My background in drama gives me extensive critical and practical knowledge in Shakespeare, and my experience in my second placement, along with my PGCE subject knowledge, have given me a solid understanding in English language and forms of writing. My knowledge of mark schemes and examinations has also given me an insight into planning relevant, succinct lessons that target assessment, differentiation, key questions and adhere to specific requirements in accordance with the teaching standards.
