Information about Alice

I have experience working with high and low prior attainers at both extremes of the education system, and believe that all young people, including those with diverse needs, are entitled to teaching that is inspiring and compassionate. I deliver this quality of work to all young people I meet, whilst continuously encouraging independent thought and debate.

I have a First Class Degree in English from the University of Bristol and am able to tutor at 7+, 11+, 16+, KS3, GCSE and A-Level, as well as help with university applications.

During my time in Bristol, I was an enthusiastic member of Dramsoc, the university`s longest running performing arts society. I was Directing Rep in my second year there, organising the Bristol Old Vic Directors` Scheme, and facilitating a number of projects, such as a production of `The BFG` at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. I have since worked professionally as an actor, director and writer. I directed Deadpan Theatre`s `Third Wheel` in 2017-18 at he Pleasance and Bloomsbury theatres in London, and Gilded Balloon Teviot in Edinburgh. It received 4* from The Stage, The List, Broadway Baby and A Younger Theatre. I have recently performed at the Young Vic Theatre and am currently developing new work as an actor and writer.

Availability: I am a freelance director and actor, so have a very flexible timetable which can be adjusted at short notice to the needs of tutees. I am available after school, and during weekends, bank holidays and school holidays.

Willing to travel: 12 miles

Experience: I have worked as a Teaching Assistant at Alleyn`s Junior School, where I supervised reception class as well as working with children in the higher years on a variety of academic and co-curricular projects. I assisted with the 4+ and 7+ examinations and gained an excellent understanding of the private schools` admissions system. I also helped Year Six students in the run-up to their 11+ exams, both academically and in their confidence. Working at AJS gave me much insight into the process of entrance exams, the best revision resources to use, and how to make sure students are thriving, rather than buckling under the pressure of it all.

Most recently, I have worked as part of the SEN department at Harris Academy Bermondsey. I`ve predominantly supported Year 11 students in the run-up to their GCSEs, helping children with autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, SEMH and a multitude of Speech and Language needs. In addition, I have worked with a small group of EAL students on a daily basis to help with their reading and comprehension skills. I have also been a key pastoral member of staff, having created a sensory room for any students struggling with mental health, and did arts and crafts with groups of children facing OCD and anxiety. Furthermore, I held a small seminar with Year 13 students writing their coursework and assisted them in accessing academic journals, whilst helping to unpack their ideas on texts by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Sam Selvon - writers I had specialised in at university.

Working at HAB was incredibly useful in terms of furthering my understanding of the English and Drama KS3 and GCSE curriculums. My teaching methods have improved enormously - I now have a large repertoire of methods to suit all different needs and abilities. I also received extensive counselling, First Aid and safeguarding training.

Over the summer, I partook in a week-long workshop with some students from Highshore SEN school and the National Youth Theatre. It culminated in a collaboration with inclusive circus company Extraordinary Bodies, and a performance at the National Theatre. In the new year, I will continue my work with Highshore and NYT, helping to deliver a programme of after school drama workshops to a larger group of students.
