I am an approachable, passionate and effective online English tutor and Cambridge graduate with 8+ years’ experience helping students excel at all levels, with a focus on A Level, GCSE and Eleven Plus.

My specialism is helping students with essay writing and exam technique. The most common difficulty my students encounter is finding a way to structure their thoughts about a text or idea in a logical, fluent and confident way. There are a few simple tools and concepts I teach, often untaught in schools, that, when practiced and mastered, can solve ingrained problems and help the struggling student to become a confident, successful essay-writer.

With my Eleven Plus students, my specialism is helping students refine and clarify their writing, for both longer comprehension questions and creative writing. My approach is collaborative, playful and conversational.

I teach across exam boards, including AQA, Edexcel, Cambridge/ Edexcel IGCSE, OCR, WJEC and Eduqas. I have extensive knowledge of a variety of the current set texts, including: all Shakespeare plays, all Poetry Anthologies, An Inspector Calls, Atonement, Lord of the Flies, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Frankenstein, A Christmas Carol, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and Silas Marner.

Availability: Weekday Afternoons and Evenings, Saturday mornings.

Experience: I have lived in Cambodia, Beijing, Thailand and Canada while developing a career as a filmmaker and writer alongside a career in education. I have 2 years’ experience teaching Creative Writing, across a variety of genres, to undergraduates in the most prestigious Creative Writing program in Canada (UBC), while studying for my Masters degree. Having taught in both the international and local systems in all these different places, and being fluent in Mandarin Chinese, I have a wealth of experience navigating cultural differences and communicating effectively across them.

I believe that a proper conversation, individual to individual, is always the beginning of true understanding, and true understanding is the key to academic success. Exploring texts and ideas at a deep, personal level is hugely rewarding for both tutor and tutee, and I intend to continue working with students in this way well into the future.

I have tutored using online platforms for 6+ years now, and find the flexibility and convenience this offers to be highly beneficial for tutor, tutee, and parent. Being able to schedule lessons while either I or my student is travelling, being able to connect with students who live abroad or further afield, being able to adjust to sudden changes in a student`s schedule without too much hassle, are all reasons why I choose to tutor online exclusively.
