Information about Tom

Hello all,

I’m Tom and I, unlike you, do not currently have impending exams – for now! I graduated with a first class honours degree in Physics from the University of Southampton back in 2013 and was awarded one of two graduate awards for the ‘Best Performance’ in my cohort for the highest grade-module average. Then I jumped straight into a Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces Masters at Imperial College but for a number of reasons decided it wasn’t for me and then went straight into a tutoring job with a secondary school in London. After having spent two years tutoring delightful East London A-Level students, I started my PGCE and main preoccupation of disguising my ‘Student Teacher’ status. Upon completion of my PGCE, I worked for a couple of software development related companies and am now starting a Masters at the University of Sussex - wish me luck!

Other than that, I’m a keen guitarist, comedy enthusiast/snob and ex-videogamer – willing to rant at you for a discounted rate!

Availability: My availability is as follows:

Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri: 5 - 9pm
Wed: 1pm - 9pm
Sat: 2pm-6pm
Sun: 10am - 2pm

Based in Lewes and happy to tutor in Brighton and surrounding towns/villages(/anywhere commutable by bus!).

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: My most recent teaching experience comes from my PGCE in Physics with Mathematics over the 2016/17 academic year with the Institute of Education, UCL. I taught in several London schools as part of the PGCE and taught across KS3-KS5 (A-Level), for both Mathematics and Physics and across a range of abilities (including SEN students) and have 1000+ hours of teaching and tutoring experience.

Before my PGCE, I both privately tutored and worked in an inner London school as a full-time A-Level tutor, teaching Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics A-Level students in one-to-one and small group sessions. These sessions constituted planning, target setting, learning and revision activities but were individually adapted to the individual – not everyone learns the same way! In addition to my duties as a tutor, I also supported students in an advisory role regarding UCAS applications and personal statements – I have had several students go on to study and receive offers to study at Oxbridge, Imperial and Warwick (which is – of course – through their own determination and effort!).

My experience consists of teaching and tutoring from KS3 to KS5 in Mathematics, Physics and Science across a number of exam boards (AQA, Edexcel and OCR); the bulk of my experience in Mathematics is with the Edexcel curriculum - both pre-2017 and post-2017 specifications - which includes extensive experience of studying and teaching of Pure, Statistical and Mechanics related mathematics.
