Information about Ben

Hi! I`m Ben, a recent graduate in mathematics at the University of Cambridge, hoping to continue on to a Master`s degree at Cambridge or Edinburgh next year. Throughout my degree, I specialised in applied maths and theoretical physics, with a particular interest in general relativity and quantum mechanics. Prior to this, I studied maths, further maths, and physics to A level, and also was a maths teacher in a high-performing local school during my gap year.

While working in the school, I led multiple A level lessons, as well as lunch-time sessions intended to stretch the `gifted and talented` group of students. In these sessions, we focused on maths that wasn`t on the syllabus - think Olympiad-style maths, STEP and University entrance exams, as well as University interview prep. This sort of maths is my favourite to teach - if you`re preparing for STEP or similar, I`d love to help!

The key to a successful maths teacher is to build intuition for mathematical concepts in a way that works for the student. Some students respond well to diagrams and visualisations, some respond well to `playing around` with a few examples of a concept. It`s all about finding what works best for the student, and using this to our advantage! One thing I will never encourage in my lessons is rote learning of formulae. It takes the fun out of the subject, and misses the higher level concepts! I will try and foster a level of deeper understanding of the subject to all my students, so not only can they `do` the maths, but they can understand what they are actually doing.

I`m aware that COVID has taken away a lot of school time this year and been incredibly disruptive. I`m happy to teach `catch-up` sessions for maths at any level!

Availability: I am currently available in the afternoon/evening on almost any weekday or weekend. I`m quite flexible - reach out and we can discuss a time slot!

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: I have experience tutoring GCSE and A level maths and science privately, as well as Step, Olympiad maths, and University interview preparation during my time as a school teacher.
