Information about Conan

Unfortunately I am no longer teaching the piano for now. Thanks for viewing!

My name is Conan, a pianist and a Master’s graduate in Psychology of Music from the University of Sheffield. I have enjoyed performing regularly as a classical pianist in solo recitals, as well as in collaboration with orchestra and singers. In recent years I have won the gold medal in the 5th Hong Kong Youth Virtuosos Piano Competition and have achieved my ATCL (Associate of Trinity College London) Diploma with Distinction.

I began my musical journey when I was five and went on to continue my piano training with Sophia McKett at Wells Cathedral School, a music specialist school, and with Helen Leek at the University of Warwick. I then did my Master’s in Psychology of Music at the University of Sheffield, where I learned to apply psychological methods and theory to the performance and perception of music.

• Teaching Experience

I have several years of experience in teaching piano students ranging from beginners level to grade 8. Through years of training and performance, I have acquired a proficient understanding of how music is perceived and performed, and am familiar with the process of music training and practice.

I have also led volunteers to deliver weekly music workshops at special education needs school for two years as the leader of Warwick Volunteers “Music Matters”. It was very rewarding to bring music to children with limited means and helping those with special needs (e.g., learning difficulties) by using my musical skills and applying my knowledge in psychology.

• Approach to Music Tuition

Music forms an inseparable part of my life as it provides me with a powerful means to express and experience deep human emotions. I wish to share with the student my passion in music, as I believe that one must love music to play the piano well. The lesson has to be fun, enjoyable, and inspiring for the student.

Using my background in both music and psychology, I adopt a creative and flexible approach to help students to achieve their individual goals without feeling under pressure. Whether the students are preparing for graded exams or are just playing for personal pleasure, I tailor my lessons to suit the needs and ability of the students.

I also use an interactive approach to actively engage students in the learning process by questioning students and encouraging them to question. Students will be able to progress further through constantly exploring new ideas and reflecting on what they have learned.
