Information about Joanna
Update - I started 2020 volunteering in Myanmar, teaching Inclusive Practice in a Teacher Education College. After having to return to the UK due to Covid-19, I have continued that voluntary work through online teaching, developing teaching modules for distance learning.
With over 30 years teaching and childcare experience I am available to provide a range of services in a 12 miles radius from Hythe or UK-wide via online teaching:
Tutoring - pre-school readiness, basic literacy and numeracy ages 4 - adult, SATS, general homework support, English to A` level, exam revision techniques. After initially assessing needs through discussion and observation, individual programmes of work are followed.
Pastoral Support and Guidance - Person centered planning tools to help focus direction towards positive destinations. Further and Higher Education applications and personal statements.
Availability: Throughout the day and evening, both weekdays and the weekend.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: Originally primary trained, I taught English in secondary schools in Leicester and Cardiff whilst maintaining my early literacy and numeracy teaching skills through private tutoring.
Moving to Scotland in 1992 I child-minded for 8 years whilst my boys were young, providing a flexible childcare service for both pre-school and school aged children between 7am and 6pm. Children between 8 months and 12 years old were cared for at various times, including one child with Dyspraxia, Aspergers Syndrome and Sensory Integration Dysfunction Syndrome, one child with general Development Delay and symptoms synonymous with autism, two with Dyslexia and two others with ADHD.
Returning to teaching in 2001, I worked as an additional Support for Learning teacher in both secondary and primary schools enabling children and young people to achieve regardless of any differences in the way they learn or of any social, emotional, cognitive, environmental or physical issues that can make learning more difficult. I have always firmly believed that there is a key to unlock each and every child`s potential and that as an educator and provider of childcare it is part of my role to find that key.
I have also considerable experience in Pastoral Support and Guidance, and have embedded the counselling principles of empathy, respect and genuineness in educational mentoring practice. Using person centred planning tools I have worked with young people to enable them to recognise dreams, ambitions and possible pathways.
For 4 and a half years I managed and led the Additional Support for Learning provision in a large secondary school and 10 feeder primary schools, promoting inclusive practice that recognises differences rather than difficulties, seeks to overcome the barriers to learning created by low expectations, learned helplessness and stigmatisation, and strives to raise the attainment for all through the steps required to support the few.
After leaving Scotland for Kent I spent a year tutoring with both private clients and pupils through the Children in Care support services, before working for a year as SENCO in a private special school. That special school experience simply reaffirmed my commitment to inclusive practice - practice that is based on the principles of valuing each and every child`s presence, participation and achievement in an inclusive, learning-friendly environment.

Joanna is extremely good at working out what gaps my son had in his maths and has not only worked on these areas with him at their sessions but given him fun games online to do which suits his style of learning. Joanna has been helping my son boost confidence and skills in English also, he has been working online at home and gradually moving up levels on the programme which Joanna has access too and they go through this together in their sessions. Joanna is friendly and patient and makes learning less stressful for my son than he finds it at school. I would definitely recommend her for all abilities.

My daughter was really happy with Joanna, she told me Joanna explained things well for her to follow and comprehend. Joanna especially helped her with maths and gave her more confidence in the subject. Joanna was lovely, very polite and accommodating.
