Information about Serena

I am a fully qualified, experienced Primary School Teacher (graded as `Outstanding`) now running my own business as a full time Professional Private Tutor.

I provide a high-quality, professional service specialising in private one-to-one lessons in Maths (Year 1 to Year 6) and 11+ (Year 3 to Year 6). I have a proven track record of success and the vast majority of enquiries result from word of mouth recommendations.

I am also an ‘Approved Tutor’ for pupils attending two local primary schools.

Unlike classroom teaching, private tuition is purely centred around the needs of the individual and as a result can produce amazing results. I love to help children gain confidence through their increased understanding. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a child improve and progress.

LESSONS:
Lessons can either take place in the purpose-built teaching cabin in the grounds of my property or online.

I have taught many online lessons and these lessons are of the same quality and result in the same high levels of progress as lessons taught in person.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
Over the years I have successfully taught children in all subjects in both Key Stage 1 (years 1 and 2) and Key Stage 2 (years 3,4,5 and 6) in Leicester, Peterborough, Skegness and Louth.

ELEVEN PLUS TUITION:
The Eleven Plus tests are taken every September by children in year 6 hoping to attend a Grammar School from year 7. The tests are designed to challenge the children in order to select the top 25% of pupils based on academic potential.

I was the teacher responsible for administering the practice papers and real tests in school. I now specialise in teaching the specific skills required to answer the questions in the GL Verbal Reasoning and GL Non-Verbal Reasoning & Spatial Reasoning papers. The most recent addition to the test papers are the Spatial Reasoning questions. These are testing for skills which are the basis for success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects.

I offer tuition for entry into all the schools in the Lincolnshire Consortium of Grammar Schools (LCGS):
Boston Grammar School (Boys)
Boston High School Academy (Girls)
Bourne Grammar School (Mixed)
Carre’s Grammar School (Boys)
Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School
Kesteven and Sleaford High School Selective Academy (Girls)
King Edward VI Grammar School, Louth (Mixed)
King Edward VI Academy, Spilsby (Mixed, bilateral)
Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Alford (Mixed)
Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Horncastle (Mixed)
Queen Elizabeth’s High School, Gainsborough (Mixed)
Skegness Grammar School (Mixed)
Spalding Grammar School (Boys)
Spalding High School (Girls)
The King’s School Grantham (Boys)

I have a large bank of resources and I also buy in brand new, carefully selected and up-to-date Eleven Plus practice materials (including workbooks and test papers). In addition, I have hands-on 3D equipment to bring Spatial Reasoning questions to life.

I use my skills as a teacher to plan tailor-made lessons and homework for each individual tutee based on the needs of the child and the number of weeks before the tests.

Eleven Plus tuition really helps to prepare children because most of the skills required are not taught in school. At first, lessons focus on the teaching and learning of the skills. Then, nearer the exams, building stamina and working at speed on whole test papers becomes increasingly important.

I give regular, honest feedback to parents to enable them to have a clear understanding of how their child is performing against the standards of the tests.

Any support or tuition focused on preparing for the 11+ exam also brings a significant and broader benefit to children in terms of their general school work and confidence.

MATHS TUITION:
I have always loved teaching Maths. In school, I was the `Maths Co-ordinator` or `Maths Leader` and I am also a `Grade A` Key Stage 2 SATS Exam Marker. I have a lot of experience of preparing children for the SATS (the end of Key Stage tests).

Many children find Maths difficult - this is where I can help. I am highly skilled at identifying gaps in learning and misconceptions. I am also able to explain complex concepts in ways which are easy to understand. This results in my tutees making accelerated progress.

Maths is taught differently in Primary Schools compared to Secondary Schools. Being trained in Primary Education means that I teach in ways which are suited specifically to children in years 1 to 6. I have fun, interactive Maths equipment which children love to either handle in person or engage with online. This really cements their understanding of otherwise abstract concepts.

I follow the latest National Curriculum and Government initiatives and I invest heavily in the most up-to-date teaching resources for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

I have a large bank of resources available and also brand new workbooks are ordered in whenever they are required. I select the workbooks from an excellent range covering all Programmes of Study from Foundation Stage all the way through to year 6.

For children in year 2 or year 6, I also offer SAT preparation which includes the completion of test papers.

Please feel free to contact me for further information.

TESTIMONIALS:
I am proud to say that many of my enquiries come from friends of my clients (by word of mouth). Here are just a few testimonials:

Mrs V - Wouldn`t know where my child would be today had it not been for Serena. Professional, understanding and patient. Highly recommend.

Mrs A - I approached Serena having already seen first hand what an excellent teacher she was. Serena`s tutoring gave my daughter the confidence and ability to fly her 11+ and gain a place at Alford Grammar! I would recommend Serena to anyone looking for 11+ or Maths tuition for their child.

Mrs S - My child`s end of year report said that my son was well below average for Maths. He would shut down if I tried to help him. After just one year with Serena, he is now above the standard required for his year group! Unbelievable! I can not recommend Serena enough.

Mr H - Serena is a very professional and dedicated tutor who has improved my son`s maths ability and confidence tremendously.

Mrs F - Serena is amazing, she has such a calm and lovely way with the kids. My daughter is particularly shy and really struggles to work well when she is under pressure. Serena made her feel comfortable immediately and put her at ease. My daughter doesn’t particularly enjoy doing the school work, but thoroughly enjoyed her session with Serena and is looking forward to the next. Highly recommended!

I am so happy I found Serena. She tutored my daughter through the 11+ back in 2016 and she passed! Serena is kind, patient and cares a lot for her students. My daughter absolutely loved her lessons with Serena and now we have her back tutoring our son. Fantastic tutor and lovely lady.
