Information about Alex

Hi, I’m a first year History student at University College London and would love to put my interest in the subject to good use by helping others to achieve academically alongside developing their own interest in the study of the past. To me, History is exciting as although the events we’ll be studying happened many years ago, their relevance can often still be seen today, therefore the subject enables you to see current affairs in a different light.

Just seven months ago I was sitting my A Level exams therefore I have a very fresh knowledge of what it’s like to deal with the stresses and pressures of exam season. I hope to use this recent experience to prepare my students thoroughly so that they can take a relaxed, confident approach to exams, enabling them to channel their brilliance when it counts.

Alongside studying in London I have been playing plenty of sport, especially Tennis and Badminton. I also coach Tennis in my spare time, which has given me an idea of how fulfilling recognising progress can be, motivating me to help others achieve their potential academically also. Although revising for exams is of great importance, I also feel that the continued of leisure activities is crucial as having something to look forward to after a period of study always makes the work more productive.

Experience: My sessions will be tailored to the needs of the student. In this way, learning time will be maximised as my sessions will primarily be based upon the student’s areas of weakness, whilst also including additional information and insight which will make the top grades easily obtainable. I see tutoring as a two-way process. I think it’s of vital importance to ask the student what they already know about a certain topic as it causes them to think differently about words in a textbook. Active revision is always the most beneficial. Therefore, my sessions will be very interactive, allowing me to fill in any gaps in the student’s knowledge and build their confidence in the subject. The work that I cover in the sessions will always be linked to the final exam as although my sessions will be enjoyable and thought-provoking; my ultimate aim is to help my students achieve the grade they deserve. Therefore, I will go through tricky exam questions so that the student can improve the structuring of their answers which will inevitably increase their grade. For me, asking myself questions about a period of history is particularly useful as it makes the revision more engaging and provides every session with direction. This also makes you think for yourself as a historian, rather than relying on the opinions of the authors of the textbook. This will give a much deeper understanding of the topic, whilst also developing crucial analytical skills. I have over 50 hours tutoring experience working with GCSE/A Level History and English students and have been successful in helping them to achieve the highest grades.
