Information about Serife

I completed a PhD in Computational Biology in 2019 with minor corrections. I have also previously completed a BSc in mathematics, statistics and computing with first class honours and a MSc in Applied Mathematics with distinction. Recently, I was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and have also obtained a PGCHEP (Post-Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice) certification to teach at university level. My experience and knowledge range from mathematical and theoretical to numerical and computational. I have included a list of some of the relevant modules I have taken during my MSc and BSc degrees below.

MSc Modules taken:
- Computational methods (with Matlab)
- Inverse problems (with Matlab)
- Scientific software design & development (with VBA)
- Mathematics of complex systems (acoustics, mechanics and electromagnetism) (with Matlab + PDE Tool)
- Research project: Numerical Modelling of Glacier Systems (with Matlab)

BSc Modules taken:
Year 3: Methods of Nonlinear Mathematics (with MATLAB), Numerical Methods & Software for Partial Differential Equations (with MATLAB and Excel), Actuarial Mathematics, Methods of Optimisation, Scheduling Models & Algorithms, and Statistical Modelling.
Year 2: Linear Algebra, Numerical Methods & Computer Algorithms (with MATLAB), Operational Research & Personal Development, and Statistical Methods.
Year 1: Calculus & Mathematical Methods, Mathematical Technology & Thinking (with MATLAB), Discrete Mathematics & Combinatorics, and Probability & Statistics.
BSc dissertation: Climate Modelling (Energy Balance models with MATLAB).

Availability: Please check my schedule on Tutor Hunt. Usually available evenings and Sundays but may have exceptions. Can accommodate urgent requests depending on the nature of request. Also accept a group of students that would like to take the same classes.

Experience: Since 2020, I have been teaching in class and online using Zoom at University of Greenwich and University of Essex. The Zoom classes are interactive online lessons and focus on mathematics and statistics support sometimes delivered in combination with the use of software such as SPSS, R or MATLAB. My students range from GCSE to postgraduate degree level. Students I teach come from different backgrounds and their degree subjects vary. Some examples are these: computer science, health science, chemistry, biology, psychology, economics, business, and nursing. Although I have been a Tutor Hunt member for at least 8 years, I have only been actively tutoring on this platform since June 2022.

Prior to the start of my teaching experience in 2019, I have mentored fellow students in Mathematics and Statistics during college, BSc and MSc degrees whilst studying. Students mentored have successfully completed their degrees and now are following successful careers. I specialise in numerical and computational mathematics, thus, can help with discretisation of equations, application of different methods (FDM or FVM) and solving them using MATLAB (or VBA).

NB: I hold a DBS check obtained during my involvement with STEM at secondary schools whilst a Systems Engineer in 2019.

DBS Check: Yes

Really great teacher, take time to explain topics thoroughly and answers any questions to make sure I had a good grasp on the topic. Would highly recommend

Mila (Ms)

During several sessions we had so far, Serife has helped me a lot with statistics and apart from being knowledgeable and skillful in this subject, she is also incredibly flexible, kind and tolerant. Serife went above and beyond to help me and she was responsive to all my queries outside of the hours we had booked for a lesson. Serife is a person who genuinely cares about her students, she is not only here with the agenda to profit from her knowledge, which is not something you commonly see on Tutor Hunt and other educational websites. I would highly recommend Serife to everyone who is struggling with statistics, and related subjects, as she has been a great help and a joy to work with.

Tutors Response :

Thank you very much Mila for this lovely feedback. It is so nice to hear that you have found our sessions helpful :-). Your feedback means a lot. Wish you the very best and you are most welcome to contact me again in future if you ever need any help.
