Information about Sarah

Formerly Head of Languages Faculty (English, Media & Film, Modern Foreign Languages and English as an Adittional Language) at Chelsea Academy. While on a partial career break from from full-time teaching (since 2017) to care for my three young children, I have been working as AQA GCSE examiner (Language and Literature), private tutor and part-time Teacher of English at Pimlico Academy. Due to a change in personal circumstances and childcare commitments, I am no longer able to work full days in a school. Therefore, I am looking for flexible tutoring, preferably weekday mornings, one weekday evening or Sundays.

My main subject areas are English Literature and History. I have a BA in English Literature and History and an MA in Modern and Contemporary History with specific intetest in the historical contexts in which literature is produced.

My approach to private tutoring sessions is very structured. I like to start by getting an understanding of what their class teachers require and how their classwork is going. I also try to ensure students have the opportunity to learn and/or revise content, practise extended writing or reading responses and receive on the spot feedback, all within 1-2 session, so they are able to utilise the feedback to make improvements to their work between sessions. I have found this approach maximises the impact of tutoring sessions and ensures students make progress.

I always devote a significant amount of time to researching the specific requirements of each exam board for each particular subject - including assessment objectives, exemplars and examiner feedabck. This helps me teach students how to improve their academic writing style and structure responses in a way which will maximise their exam success.

I have maintained a strong interest in my subject areas throughout my teaching career and keep up to date with academic developments in English as well as new approaches to teaching and learning. I always try to provide reading and other stimulus materials that caters to specific student`s interests, within the parameters of exam board requirements. My approach to tutoring is personalised and I will spend some time at the start assessing the individual students` needs, including looking at school work and class teacher feedback if available.
